Five Times College Will Make You Miss Your Parents

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNCW chapter.

1.The First Time You Get Sick.

College dorms are a massive pool of germs just waiting to attack, so you will get sick. But being sick at college is not like being sick at home. I know I definitely missed my parents a little extra when I caught my first cold at college and had no one to take care of me. Adulthood definitely slapped me in the face when I had to buy my own meds and make my own doctor’s appointment.

2.When You Have to Buy Your Own Groceries.

When you’re living with your parents, food seems to magically appear in your cupboards and fridge. However, a few weeks into school when the food mom and dad bought you runs out, more does not magically appear. Trust me, I hoped it would too. Grocery shopping on your own makes you wanna go sprinting back home where it didn’t cost $50 to stock the kitchen.

3.When You’re on Your Third Night in a Row of Ramen.

If there is ever a time when you miss your parents, it’s this. Having to fend for yourself when it comes to meals is a daunting task. I can remember one week when my meal plan was running low, calling my stepmom and asking her if it was possible for her to ship me a home cooked meal. So listen carefully when I tell you, APPRECIATE EVERY HOME MADE MEAL. You will miss them dearly.

4. When You Fail Your First Test.

To state the obvious, college is hard. So you are going to get back a grade or two that you are not satisfied with. You will fail a test or quiz or project. When you do, you will feel defeated and your self esteem will plummet. I remember failing my first Chemistry test, and all I wanted to do was have my dad hug me and tell me I was still smart.

5. When it Comes Time to Clean Your Apartment.

Growing up, mom or dad always seemed to keep the house sparkly clean without much work. However, your dishes seem to pile up and the bathroom seems to need constant cleaning. While your on your second load of laundry, and scrubbing the floors for the third time that month, I guarantee you will wish your parents were there to help.

It takes growing up and moving out to truly be able to appreciate everything our parents have done for us over the years. From the little things like cleaning or cooking to the big things like being there when things get hard. So maybe we should all take an extra minute out of our day to say thank you and let those who raised us know that they are loved.
