Campus Eats: This Over That

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNCW chapter.

Being a student at UNCW means having access to all of the eatery around campus. This includes fast food chains and the original campus options UNCW has as well. While it’s so easy to just grab a chicken sandwich from Chick-fil-A everyday before class, for people avoiding the freshman fifteen, that doesn’t seem like the ideal quick fix when they’re in a hurry. Here’s a list of foods that are on the healthier side that will make you feel a little less guilty when you order to-go in order to have time to finish that last-minute assignment. Plus, some of these options can apply to fast food places that have locations off campus, too.

Chick-fil-A:

Eat THIS: Grilled Chicken Sandwich

(310 Cal, 6g Fat, 36g Carbs, 29g Protein)

Not THAT: Fried Chicken Sandwich

(440 Cal, 19g Fat, 40g Carbs, 28g Protein)

Let’s be honest, the fried chicken sandwich always hits the spot, but the grilled chicken sandwich is a much healthier alternative, and still tastes awesome! (TIP: When looking at nutrition facts especially when eating fast food, always go for the option that has higher grams of protein than fat.)

Einstein Bros Bagels:

Eat THIS: Egg White, Turkey Sausage and Cheddar Wheat Bagel Thin Sandwich

(350 Cal, 33g Carbs, 14g Fat, 23g Protein)

Not THAT: Applewood Bacon and Cheddar Egg Sandwich on an Asiago Bagel

(520 Cal, 55g Carbs, 21g Fat, 30g Protein)

(TIP: Carbs will be what you need to look out for when going to Einstein’s because of the bagels. If you choose a bagel thin over an actual bagel when ordering your favorite sandwich, it can subtract 70 to 120 calories from your meal!)

Subway:

Eat THIS: Oven Roasted Chicken

(320 Cal, 5g Fat, 46g Carbs, 23g Protein)

Not THAT: Chicken and Bacon Ranch Melt

(590 Cal, 30g Fat, 44g Carbs, 37g protein)

With Subway, choosing a healthier bread option can lower the calories a bit. Staying away from extra sauces and fats is what will lead you to the healthier options they have!

All of these healthier options are really tasty and are so much better for you! While it’s always good to watch what you put into your body and figure out what really is in the food you eat on a daily basis from the places you eat on campus, don’t forget to treat yourself from time to time!
