The Importance of Routines

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNCG chapter.

I never realized how much of a creature of habit I was until about three years ago. When you are living at home with your parents, their routine is yours and your theirs. Once I moved out, however, I realized the importance of having my own routines very quickly. Some people dread the idea of falling into routines, but I think there is something therapeutic and necessary about these kinds of instances.

Most of life is sporadic and fast. Having a few set routines in your life gives you the chance to fully control some aspects of life. Although it’s kind of cheesy, this little bit of control is pretty exciting, and luckily, routines to do not have to be grand.

Personally, I have three pretty set routines: morning, night, and the lunch date. For my mornings, I like to wake up, make some coffee, and crawl back in bed to watch my favorite Youtuber while I have my coffee. Night time for me is pretty similar with a hot beverage of some kind and watching an episode of whatever show I am binging. The lunch date routine changes every semester for me, but I always make sure to have a set day of the week in which my best friend and I get lunch between classes.

Of course, life happens and my routines sometimes cannot be followed, but I try to stick to them as much as possible. When my routines are not enacted for a couple days in a row, I start to feel irritable and sluggish. I usually have no idea why such feelings creep in until I remember my routines. Once I fall back into my routines for a bit, I feel better and am more productive in all ways.
