Dressing for the Job You Want

Many of us have heard the phrase “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have,” but what does that really mean? Can changing your apparel really affect the outcome of a job interview or result in getting passed over for a promotion? Well, according to Marie Claire, dressing for the position you desire is still important, but it is equally as important to find a style that works for you and feels authentic. As the culture of business begins to change with more young people joining the workforce, the attire that is considered appropriate for the workplace changes as well. Here are some tips to help you prepare for future interviews or professional events while still retaining your genuine style that makes you unique.

1.  Find a job that fits your style – or be willing to adapt. While some jobs are lenient on dress codes, most corporate settings will require some form of “business casual” while on the job. If this is not a situation that you will feel comfortable with, it might be better to continue the job search for something a little more relaxed. However, if your options are few or you are in desperate need of a job it would be wise to comply willingly with corporate standards for the time being.

2.  If you’re unsure, go big or go home. Sometimes it is unclear what the company policy is on workplace apparel, so it is always better to dress professionally than risk being too casual. For an interview this means wearing a blazer and skirt or pants, even if the employees or other applicants seem to be dressed down a bit.

3. Use current professionals as a template. When preparing for an interview, take notice of how current employees in that field are dressing and use that as a template for your own outfit. This does not mean that you have to imitate the styles that you see, but rather that you can change them slightly and add flair to make them your own. Not only will this help you feel confident for your interview or first day on the job, but you will already look like you belong in that field.

Searching for a job can be nerve-racking and an outfit is sometimes the last thing on your mind, but taking the time to personalize your professional look can pay off in the long run. Many employers notice what you are wearing before they get to know you and use this as a first judgment of your character. So, “dress for the job you want,” but don’t forget to dress like you!
