4 Things to do If Valentine’s Day Isn’t Your Favorite

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNCG chapter.

Alright I’ll admit Valentine’s Day is not my favorite holiday, not by a long shot. Admittedly parts of the holiday are pretty cute like celebrating relationships, receiving flowers, having a secret admirer, and of course eating all the chocolate. However, most of it just does not appeal to me, and I know I’m not alone. So whether you’re not into the holiday because of your relationship status, your aversion to all things overly lovey-dovey or you’re truly convinced it is a holiday created for the card companies, here are 4 things to do to avoid the Valentine’s Day festivities.

1. Do NOT go out to eat on Valentine’s Day – You will be surrounded by so many people out celebrating. Really nowhere is safe for the whole week because the holiday seems to have expanded into a week-long event as people celebrate early/late. All of the restaurants will also most likely be decked out in holiday decor; so you will literally be surrounded by all things Valentine’s Day.

2. Do NOT go into a Hallmark store – (or avoid the clearly labeled Valentine’s section in almost every store these days) Honestly, this one is a win-lose. By avoiding these places you don’t have to see all of the obnoxious pink and red decor, but you also miss out on the candy. If you’re truly looking to avoid Valentine’s Day this year, definitely don’t go. But if you are just slightly annoyed by the holiday, I suggest venturing in to stock up on discount candy the day after Valentine’s Day.

3. Do something for yourself – On the day that is totally focused on celebrating relationships, celebrate yourself. Do something nice for yourself like giving yourself a day off of homework, buying yourself some candy or creating a spa day for yourself.

4. Do respect that Valentine’s Day may be someone’s favorite – Whether you’re into this holiday or not, it’s important to remember that not everyone feels the same way towards the holiday. Your significant other, friend group, office, etc. might be really into this holiday. Be sure to respect their feelings and maybe be ready to make a compromise. If your significant other or friend group is really into Valentine’s Day let them take the lead with planning and maybe consider contributing something small to the festivities to show you care.

Valentine’s Day isn’t for everyone and it can be annoying to be surrounded by all the celebrations if you’re not into it. Remember it’s just a day and there are always things you can do to make it more tolerable!
