Is He a Jerk or a Keeper?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Chapel Hill chapter.

Because the dating world at UNC is skewed by the male to female ratio of the campus, sometimes we get the short end of the stick. There was even a New York Times article written about it! It seems that some guys have developed a sense of entitlement when it comes to girls, because they know they have the upper hand. Although it is exciting to get the attention of a cute guy, it sucks to have to deal with their bad behavior. It may be tempting to let it slide because you think there aren’t any more fish in the sea, but don’t settle for someone who treats you disrespectfully. Here are a few signs to tell if your guy is a jerk or a keeper.

10 Signs He’s a Jerk:

  1. He only texts you after midnight. Bonus points if all you get is a “Hey”, “U still up?” or “Come over.”
  2. More than 90% of the time you spend with him, he is noticeably drunk.
  3. He doesn’t recognize you or remember your name, even after you have met him three times, and/or hooked up with him.
  4. He doesn’t seem to care about you or your interests, and doesn’t even bother to engage you in a meaningful conversation. Why talk to each other when you could be hooking up?
  5. The only compliments you ever get from him are sexual in nature, and usually involve a part of your body (Not your eyes or smile).
  6. If you try to suggest going on an actual date or spending quality time together, he immediately implies that you are being “clingy” or says that he “doesn’t have time for anything serious right now.”
  7. If he takes forever to text you back, or forgets to reply at all. Bonus points: If his excuse is “He is bad at texting.” There is no such thing as being bad at texting. That just means he is too lazy or doesn’t care enough about you to take two seconds to type a response.
  8. He doesn’t care if you walk alone at night. In fact, he would love for you to walk home, because he “has to get up really early.”
  9. He pushes your head down while you are dancing with him. Even worse: he pushes your head down while you are hooking up with him. See: “The Head push.”
  10. He hits on your friends, or visibly checks them (or other girls) out in front of you.

10 Signs He’s a Keeper:

  1. He loves taking you out on dates, and offers to pay for your dinner.
  2. He always texts or calls you back in a timely manner.
  3. He sends you sweet texts/snapchats/messages just to see how your day is or to let you know he is thinking about you.
  4. He offers you his coat when you are cold.
  5. He loves cuddling, and doesn’t even care if you don’t feel like hooking up.
  6. He remembers details about your life that you only mentioned in passing, like the name of your pet or what sports you played in high school.
  7. He is excited to introduce you (show you off) to all of his friends, and when you meet them they already know who you are.
  8. He lets you pick the movie/restaurant/tv channel. Bonus points if it’s a chick flick or Bravo.
  9. He is concerned about your safety. He would never let you walk home alone at night, even if that means he has to go 20 minutes out of his way to escort you.
  10. He takes time out of his busy schedule to see you and he makes it clear that you are one of his priorities.
