Campus Celeb: Nicole Comparato

When Nicole Comparato, a junior broadcast journalism and political science double major, left Boca Raton to “get out of Florida,” she ended up at UNC, her twin sister in tow. She joined The Daily Tar Heel as a freshman and worked her way up to her current position as the University Desk editor, in which she often works more than eight hours a day (but we all know you don’t win awards from the North Carolina Press Association by slacking).  Nicole was also recently selected the 2013-2014 editor-in-chief -- not a bad way to start off your 21st year, huh? Akilah Ffriend, you might recognize her from the philanthropy work she’s done over seas, or maybe you’ve seen her giving tours as a student ambassador, or you could possibly have her as your minority advisor. As a junior Health Policy and Management Major, Akilah is not only active in countless organizations around campus but she is also the founder of Rise Leadership Academy, a non profit organization meant for the betterment of youth in St. Thomas Parish, Jamaica. A junior from Washington D.C., Peter is the frontman of Morning Brigade, a folk/rock/indie band that has gained widespread popularity not only in Chapel Hill, but also throughout the entire Triangle. John is a first-year from Upper Saddle River, New Jersey, majoring in public relations. At 18 years old, he has already had a song premiered by Karmin, sang at MetLife Stadium and recorded his own CD, which is available on iTunes. READ MORE

When the 6’5 offensive tackle isn’t protecting the quarterback on game day, you can find sophomore Kiaro Holts either in the Undergraduate Library studying or in his room watching Netflix. The Communications major from Indiana fell in love with UNC’s diversity and friendly student body. Not to mention, Kiaro has found his place with the brotherhood of UNC football. “It’s really comforting to know that I am a part of a brotherhood that will last my whole life,” Kiaro said. Football is more than just putting on the Carolina Blue jersey on game days for Kiaro, though. It’s a challenge to become a better person and to do something positive during his stay at Carolina.
