The Feminist Blog: Beauty Work

By Mollie Murphy
May 3, 2011 - 10:46pm

Have you ever felt like beauty is a part time job? You’re not alone. Naomi Wolf, in her bestseller The Beauty Myth refers to beauty maintenance as “the third shift.” The first shift is obviously paid work, while domestic work and household chores are quite commonly referred to as “the second shift.” Most people these days can probably relate to the first two shifts. You have your day job and/or classes, and then you deal with cooking, cleaning, and running errands (although maybe not all of us earn A’s in these subjects.) In any case, it is easy to relate to the second shift of domestic work, but what about the beauty shift?  READ MORE

Music Blog: Smoke Ring for my Halo

By Jen DuToit
April 30, 2011 - 10:18pm

2011 is proving to me a strong year in music with only four months passed, and Kurt Vile’s latest album is everything but a let down.  It’s addicting.

The album, titled Smoke Ring For My Halo, is the solo artist’s fourth thus far.
He, and others I’m sure, compare listening to the album as follows, “when u wake from a long and glorious slumber, then u realize u don't have to go to work, then u fall back into long and glorious slumber...”  Sounds pretty perfect, right?

The Feminist Blog: Gender at the Gym

By Mollie Murphy
April 27, 2011 - 2:38pm

It is hard, if not impossible, to escape the pressure for our bodies to fit gender ideals. Men are supposed to take up space with mass and muscle (and body hair). Women are supposed to be thin, petite, and take up as little space as possible. We say that men are “naturally” bigger and stronger than women. This may be the truth in many cases, but I could easily name off a dozen or more men who are shorter than me and/or weigh less. In fact, I can probably name as many guys who are smaller than me as I can guys who are bigger than me. It is obviously not uncommon to look different than the male or female “ideal.” So why do we feel inadequate when we don’t match up? READ MORE

The Feminist Blog: What it Means to be a Feminist

By Mollie Murphy
April 19, 2011 - 8:20pm

My friend once told me he hates feminists. I gave him a puzzled look, a look similar to the one I often get from people when I tell them that I am a feminist. Why do so many people disagree on feminism? Some people are blatantly against feminism and its core values. However, misinterpretations about feminism are not uncommon, and are often surrounded by confusion of its definition.

So… what is feminism? READ MORE

The Feminist Blog: Singled Out

By Mollie Murphy
April 13, 2011 - 3:54pm

We’re all familiar with the stigma against singles. Valentine’s Day is nearly just as well known as “Single’s Awareness Day.”  Being single is seen as a state of discontentment, even if the single person does not feel unhappy or lonely.  A romantic partner is believed to be a crucial aspect of a balanced and fulfilling life.  The pressure to find a mate is enormous, and the pressure to marry emerges shortly after if one enters a steady relationship.  Is this stigma based on truth, or is pity towards singles an unnatural social construction?  Are single people truly less happy than those in romantic relationships? KBGA college radio serves to bring Missoula and its university students endless nights of amazing music and all-age excitement.  This year’s Fools’ Night Out will, undoubtedly, be no different.

While, of course, there will be Missoula band representation from the local favorite, Victory Smokes, a good deal of hype has been laid on event headliner at the Badlander, Acid Mothers Temple & Melting Paraiso U.F.O. READ MORE
