Top Picks for Fall Flicks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UK chapter.

Don’t let the high temperatures fool you; the season of fall is on its way! It’s time again for boots and scarves, pumpkin-scented candles, bonfires, holidays and of course, tailgates. But there is one more activity you should be adding to your fall bucket list: going to the movies! We know you do it all year round but with the fall 2012 lineup, there really is no better time to

Over 88 movies are set to debut in theaters across the nation this fall, with genres ranging from an action-packed sequel in which Liam Neeson gets to show off more of his very particular set of skills, to a cartoon with a video game villain who wants to be a hero. But with all of the choices, how do you decide where to put your hard earned cash at the theater this year? Luckily for you, we’ve compiled a list of our top picks for the fall movie season. So find your favorite genre, grab some popcorn and keep your eyes open for these future flicks!

Comedy: ‘Pitch Perfect’ (Oct. 5)
You may be thinking, please not another movie-musical. But don’t judge this choir film just yet! With a well-chosen cast and quick, witty humor, Pitch Perfect is not your typical High School Musical. In fact, the movie is set at a college, in which freshman Beca is persuaded into joining the school’s all-girls singing group. With the help of the group, she tries to turn around their boring reputation in time for competition season. Anna Kendrick and Brittany Snow star, but it’s really Rebel Wilson (Bridesmaids) who pulls all the laughs.

Action: ‘Skyfall’ (Nov. 9)
While we are extremely excited about the sequel to Taken, the newest James Bond film is probably your best bet in terms of a non-stop action flick. The plot doesn’t vary too much from the typical Bond story, but from beginning to end ‘Skyfall’ delivers the intensity that will have you on the edge of your seat.

Thriller: ‘Sinister’ (Oct. 5)
‘Sinister’ makes perfect timing to be the scare-the-pants-off thriller that everyone craves before Halloween. And it delivers. A man and his family move into a house that is haunted by the figure that killed the previous owners. With the innocence of the father (played by Ethan Hawke), you just can’t help but feel bad for him. You also can’t help the fact that nightmares are soon to follow.

Drama: ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ (Nov. 21)
Bradley Cooper stars alongside Hunger Games actress Jennifer Lawrence in this drama-comedy about a man (Cooper) who’s finding his way again after recently being released from a mental institution. But of course things get tricky when a love-interest (Lawrence) falls into the equation. We’re betting that ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ will be worthy of your cash, but mostly; you can never have too much Bradley Cooper.

Something New: ‘Perks of Being a Wallflower’ (Sept. 21)
Emma Watson, Logan Lerman and Ezra Miller star in this typical tale of growing up told in a not-so-typical way. We can only hope that the film adaptation is equally as moving as Stephen Chbosky’s best-selling novel. From the trailer, we say it looks pretty promising.

Something Familiar: ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2’ (Nov. 16)
Twihards: it’s finally here. The final installment of the Twilight saga wraps up in this second half of the two-part finale. Not only will it give fans the exciting closure they’ve been waiting for, but it will also remind us all of a better time for Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.

Wild Card: ‘The Paperboy’ (Oct. 5)
The story line could be a hit or miss, but with a cast including Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman, John Cusack and Matthew McConaughey, it should be well-executed. And if not, at least you’ll see Zac Efron shirtless and pants-less.

Maybe movies aren’t the first thing that comes to mind when you think ‘fall’, but this year they definitely won’t be the last.
