Reasons for My Love Affair with Coffee

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UK chapter.

Since we were small children, we’ve all developed a sense of what love is. For me, I found love in a handsome history major aspiring to be a dentist while on our respective high school academic teams. Now, we don’t always agree on things, especially not on choice of drink. With that being said, I find myself writing the story of my first affair.  Here it is, a few reasons I’ve found as to why everyone should start this affair with me, an affair with coffee:

1. The scent is more than just good to smell

A team over at Seoul National University did a few experiments and found that coffee actually is proving to reduce stress. The experiment was done with laboratory rats, some of whom were stressed by being deprived of sleep. The study ended up finding that the aroma of the coffee beans helped ease the stress of the sleep-deprived rodents. So this drink not only leaves me more energized, but also helps me destress which is something really great for a college student like myself.

2. Enjoy a variety of drinks

A research study was published in 2006 that included 125,000 people over 22 years showed that those who drink at least one cup of coffee a day were 20 percent less to develop liver cirrhosis — an autoimmune disease caused by excessive alcohol consumption that could lead to liver failure and cancer. Arthur L. Klatsky, the lead author of the study reported, “Consuming coffee seems to have some protective benefits against alcoholic cirrhosis, and the more coffee a person consumes the less risk they seem to have of being hospitalized or dying of alcoholic cirrhosis.” If you’re someone who enjoys weekends at Two Keys Tavern, spend Sunday morning with a fresh cup of Jo.

3. Great Conversation Starter

Whether it’s a business meeting with colleagues or a reunion with an old friend, a coffee shop is always where you need to end up. There’s something about getting drinks to really get the conversation started. With that being said, you don’t always have to go out for alcohol, try coffee instead. It’s warm to hold onto and probably make you feel more open to talk to your guest.

4. Works “almost” like sunblock

Fight the rays this summer! A study at Harvard Medical School followed 112,897 men and women over a 20-year period and, apparently, women who drink three or more cups of coffee a day are much less likely to develop skin cancer than those who don’t. So have fun on the coast this summer lying out with sunscreen AND a thermos!

5. Weight loss

If you’re anything like me, you’ve had your fair share of looking for ways to sheds some pounds this summer. Why not try coffee? A study found that coffee can increase your metabolism and mobilize fat from fat tissues. Now I’m not saying you drink coffee for a week and you lose 10 pounds. However, why not give it a try for a while and see how you feel after.

Of course, these reasons are not guaranteed for everyone. However, I find fun in trying new things and I hope you do as well. My love affair with coffee has brought me lots of laughs and conversation starters over the years. It’s helped me stay awake studying for exams and it’s helped me calm down with it’s sweet scent (I pile on the creamer). While the affair is always fun, be sure to make your partner feel just as loved!
