The “New” Normal

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UK chapter.

Nickolay Lamm, graphic designer turned toymaker, has revolutionized the Barbie doll, creating what he refers to as the Lammily doll; what the toy would look like if she had the measurements of an average 19-year-old woman’s body (based on data from the CDC). According to Time, she comes with a sticker-extension pack, complete with cellulite, freckles and acne. She also has brown hair instead of blonde.

While there are those that criticize Lamm and his new doll, I love it.

I myself am not exactly the proportions of a traditional Barbie doll. The Lammily doll reflects what an average woman looks like. We have curves. We get zits. We have areas on our body we don’t necessarily like. This toy shows women (and, most importantly, girls) they don’t have to be ashamed of who they are/what they look like.

The Lammily doll celebrates women of all shapes, sizes and proportions.

I, for one, applaud Lamm for his work, and hope this doll gets the appreciation and respect it deserves.

"Sam I am," and I LOVE to read. Whether it's Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" or The Mortal Instruments series, I'm always reading. And when I'm not reading, I'm writing; English papers, magazine editorials, you name it! Italian food is my favorite, shoe shopping is my addiction, and I hate cold weather. I'm also a proud member of Slytherin house (we're not all bad, I swear).
