A Big Love for Valentine’s Day

I love “love.”

I am a big fan of gooey love letters and sweet good morning texts. My heart melts when my friends show me the cute little gifts their significant others have given them. So accordingly, I love Valentine’s Day.

Even though I have been single every Valentine’s Day for the past 22 years, Valentine’s Day is still one of my favorite holidays.

Elementary school brought parties with snacks, little cards given out to everyone and getting to decorate your own mailbox had me over the moon. Middle school and high school consisted of my friends and me buying each other the dollar roses and suckers to have delivered at the end of the day. Every year I would come home to a cute little gift from my parents. Still at 22, my mom usually gets me my favorite candy with a sweet card.

I hear plenty of people argue with the whole “you should show your love everyday, not just for this commercial holiday,” which I totally understand. In my eyes, though, this commercial holiday is more than happy couples going on dates – it gives everyone the chance to remind others that they are loved and to feel loved.

I tell my mom that I love her everyday, but I will admit, I do not buy her mass amounts of candy and weird stuffed animals on random Wednesdays.

My friends know that I adore them, and we like to surprise each other with little gifts, but there’s something a little bit more special (and fun) about being “Valentines” with your best friend compared to a date. The people around me know that I love them, but this little holiday gives the opportunity to frivolously express that love.

I know it can be embarrassing or saddening to be “that single person” on Valentine’s Day, but honestly it can be wonderful. Whether you have a date or not, this is the perfect time of year to spread a little bit of extra love.

My hair is usually frizzy and I’m usually craving coffee. I’m a senior at U.K. majoring in Secondary Education with a focus in Social Studies and minoring in Anthropology. I’m so happy to be writing for HerCampus, and so blessed to be on our executive board for my senior year!
