5 Ways to Stay Organized in College

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UK chapter.

We all know that one person (or maybe you are that person) that comes to class and has no idea what’s going on and just really doesn’t have their life together. Sometimes if you know that person, you just want to try and help them. Or, if you are that person, you really need some organizational tips. Well, look no further! Here are five easy tips to help keep your school and everyday life more organized.

  1. Use a planner for day-to-day things: Using a planner to write down what happens in your classes from day to day can help you remember what you did in class. You can also use it to write down your homework and what is due the next time your class meets. When trying to keep your classes organized in your planner, you can use a color-coding system. Each class is a different color pen. Be sure to always use some kind of “marking off” system when you finish something that is due for your next class so you know it’s complete!
  2. Use a monthly calendar for big assignment due dates: Sometimes a planner is not big enough for all of the school related things going on during your week. Printing out a pre-made calendar could be of great use. Use this calendar to write down the big assignments and projects. Place it somewhere around your desk so you can always see it and make sure you are starting these bigger assignments in enough time to complete them.

  3. Use a dry erase board calendar for personal events: After you get your school life organized, use some type of dry erase calendar to write down the personal events that are going to be taking place throughout the month. This will help prevent conflicts between your school events and personal events that you would like to participate in.

  4. Use post it notes for small reminders throughout the day: Using sticky notes can really help you get small things done throughout the day. Write down little things you want to get done throughout your day and stick them in places you will see so you are able to keep up with everyday to dos. This could be as simple as leaving a note on your desk saying to clean your bedroom or to remind yourself of a dinner date that night!

  5. Try to plan your week on Sunday: On Sunday afternoon or evening, sit down and take 20-30 minutes to plan things coming up that week. This could be as simple as getting ideas together for what you will wear, or you could go into more in detail by updating all of your calendars so you know what to expect out of the week.

With these five easy tips, you are sure to get organized quickly!
