Why It’s Okay Not To Know

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

Collegiettes, we’re constantly asked if we know what we want to do and if we have some sort of game plan. Half the time we do have a plan and then other times we have no idea what we’re doing. We usually give an answer, since we’re expected to have one. We don’t need to have everything figured out. Life is about learning and taking chances.

Our freshman year, we think we need to have a major figured out already. Our families expect us to know what career we want. We know the life topic always comes up over the holidays. Someone in your family always asks “So do you know what career you want to pursue?” or “Did you pick a major yet?” All of these questions are ones that we dread to hear. We feel pressured. We stress ourselves out from trying to figure things out and to get the best grades. We pick majors or careers that are expected of us rather than picking careers we truly want to pursue. This doesn’t apply to everyone, since some people already have everything planned out.  This is what is expected of us.

They can’t expect all of these answers from us. Simply, we don’t know everything yet. We don’t know what’s going to happen 5 years from now let alone what’s going to happen a week from now. Don’t feel like you need to have everything figured out. If you want to change your major, then change it. If you still don’t know what you want to do, then take your time to figure things out. Keep your daydreams and explore different things. There’s not a deadline on when you need to have things figured out. If you stay in college longer than 5 years, then that’s okay if it means in the end that you’re happy. Life is a journey. You’re not going to know where every path is going to take you. Enjoy each moment because each one is special and unique.
