Music Festivals You Should Know About

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

One of the greatest things about summer is all of the music festivals that go on. A lot are even right here in the heart of Chicago! These three festivals are becoming increasingly popular. Get your friends together and road trip to these awesome concerts!

Coachella
This festival, hosted in southern California, started in 1993. Today, this festival has evolved into a three day music and art extravaganza that Madonna, The Black Keys, Pearl Jam, The White Stripes, and Prince have all performed at. Located in the desert, attendees of this festival are able to actually camp onsite at the concert for three days for the ultimate experience. Coachella is usually held in late spring/early summer so unfortunately it has already passed this year, but start planning an awesome getaway with your friends!

Bonnaroo
Located in Manchester, Tennessee, Bonnaroo is like the Woodstock of today. It was named one of the 50 events that changed the history of rock and roll. It was also voted by Rolling Stone magazine as “the ultimate over-the-top summer festival”. This festival has lived up to every title it has earned. With hundreds of activities to do aside from watching amazing music performances include a disco tent, a comedy tent, a Ferris wheel, hundreds of food vendor tents, and countless other things to occupy yourself when you are waiting for your favorite band to perform.

Lollapalooza
Last but certainly not least is Lollapalooza, which takes place right here in Chicago at Grant Park! This music festival has been going on for 15 years, and brings in more than 160,000 people. It was actually at Lollapalooza where the term “alternative nation” came from which ushered in an era of alternative rock music. This year it takes place August 3rd-5th, so even if you did not buy tickets, you can still walk by and hear all the incredible bands they have on the lineup. This year includes artists such as The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack White, Florence and the Machine, and Black Sabbath.
