Check out this week’s Campus Celebrity Luka Lumovic! Luka’s a freshman that is majoring in electrical engineering and music. Growing up in Barrington, his family culture had a big impact on his life with a Serbian background and influence of music. Luka’s a Dj and loves making music. After first getting into the music scene, he found music he liked but knew he could build it up to be more.

HC (HerCampus): How did you get involved with wanting to be a DJ? Where did your love from music come from?

LL (Luka Lumovic): I grew up playing instruments and loving music. When the electronic music scene started to rise, I found interest in it and wanted to get involved. There were a lot of people and music I looked up to, and that made me want to make something of my own.

HC: Do you solely do remixes or originals?

LL: I started off doing remixes, but as I grew as a producer, was later able to make my own originals.

HC: Have you performed in front of a large crowd? How did it make you feel?

LL: I’ve played a few bars and nightclubs around the city as well as some school events. I’ve worked with BOOM Entertainment and B96 a few times as well. BOOM is a great company that taught me a lot, so I have to give some credit to them. Playing in front of a huge crowd is indescribable. There’s really not an easy way to describe the energy at all besides being there to experience it yourself.

HC: How did you market or advertise yourself as a DJ?

LL: Well it’s definitely easier these days to market yourself with to social media. With all the music blogs, pages and their fan bases, if they like you it’s easy to get your name and music out there. I started building myself just by word of mouth, but that lead to a chain reaction that got me a following on my social networks. I just always wanted to make myself sound and look professional in a way that is going to be fun yet not sound stupid online.

HC: Is there anyone who you look up to as a mentor or aspire to be like? If so, who?

LL: Steve Angello. He’s such a cool guy, and is making a really big rise with being a major icon in the music scene. He’s always pushing his own limits and driving the electronic music scene in the right direction. He’s a prime example of where I’d like to be later on in my music career.

HC: DJs are often the scapegoats for the negative EDM lifestyle reputation. How do you feel about this?

LL: I feel like people will do whatever they want but I just wish more people were about the music, rather than the drugs. It’s all about the music. A lot of big Dj’s are against the drugs and try to promote against them, but it’s sometimes difficult to break people of their habits, especially if it’s what got them into the music in the first place. If you really like the music, you shouldn’t need to get messed up to have a good time. In the end it’s up to the people doing them, but in my opinion, people should be at concerts and festivals for the right reasons.

HC: Where do you see your music going from here? Do you have any long-term or short-term goals for yourself?

LL: I think I see my music going in a good direction. I just have to keep producing a lot, and make a lot of good music. Hopefully getting my music signed to great labels labels like Size, Spinnin, Ultra, and a lot of other artists’ labels, though Size is definitely my dream label.  Short-term I just want to concentrate on making great music, and playing a lot of shows. Long term I would like to see myself touring around the world, and eventually becoming an icon myself in the music industry.

HC: Are you involved in any other organizations or activities on campus?

LL: Yeah, I’m a part of the Serbian Student Organization, Greek Life and have been talking to UIC Radio.

HC: What is your dream job/career?

LL: Without a doubt, making it in the music industry.

HC: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

LL: I’d hope to be successful with my music and use that success to carry others and the music industry forward. Would love to push the limits of what were doing with music now, and have a great time doing it. It’s always an experience to see new places and meet new people around the world.

HC: If you could have a celebrity best friend, who would it be and why?

LL: Justin Timberlake. He just kind of seems like he’d be fun to hangout with, plus he’s into music and pushing his own limits, so that’s someone I’d like to have around.

HC: Ending Thoughts?

LL: I’d just say do what you love and chase your dreams. The hard work and time you put into what you love doing really does pay off so don’t give up!
