Jaden Smith’s SYRE is Iconic and Masterful

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

He’s done it again. On the 17th of this month, Jaden Smith blessed us with the release of his new album SYRE. Fans were hungry for new music since the iconic rapper’s release of CTV2 in late 2014 —and feed them he did.

Though Apple places his masterpiece in the Hip Hop/ Rap category, the album means so much more to his fans and fans of hybrid genres alike.

Artfully blending punk rock with trap, Jaden flows from track to track with skill and ease. On songs like Ninety, he shows listeners his “sad boy” side with a dreamy ballad that contains lyrics like “She says ‘Jaden you’re my soul mate’/ You only say that when you’re lonely.” He remains extremely relatable and engages listeners as his story unfolds.

Known for songs that can last up to 8 minutes and that often feature a break in which the beats and melody change, Ninety encapsulates this unique style perfectly.

Other songs like Batman have an upbeat sound similar to that of traditional trap music, and the song actually borrows its flow from Jumpman by Drake Featuring Future. In this catchy song, Jaden mocks the haters while letting them know that he’s the best out there, and he’s gonna keep being him regardless.

He raps, “Batman, Batman, Batman / Please put me on new fashion.” Jaden is Batman, and he’s calling out people who want to jack his style. Known for breaking gender boundaries by wearing traditional “female” clothing, the young artist stays in the spotlight for his originality and talent.

Jaden Smith is uniquely himself, and SYRE reflects that authenticity then tosses it back to listeners.
