Five Songs You Need To Hear Right Now

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

Music shapes our lives. I like to think of the songs I listen to as narratives of my everyday life. We listen to music in essentially every aspect of our lives; walking to class, working out, socializing with friends. These are five songs that I think every person should have in their music library. They each evict a different emotion, but all will be sure to put a smile on your face-I know they do for me!

Someday by The Strokes
This carefree New York Indie band has been making albums for over ten years now. With more popular hits like Reptilia and Last Nite, Someday is one of their best songs. They have some of the catchiest melodies and lyrics I have heard in a while, and I promise this song will make you want to grab a pair of Ray Bans, move to New York, and immerse yourself in the underground counterculture that we all wish we could be a part of-or at least I do.

Lotus Flower by Radiohead
If I had to describe this song in one word, it’d be sexy. Thom Yorke continues to change the style of his music while at the same time staying true to the essence of what is Radiohead. Lotus Flower is one of my favorite songs of all time. It’s cool and eccentric vibe instantly puts you in a relaxing mood.

Strikeout by Bromley
A relatively new band, Bromley has already established itself by ranking number 1 on the University of Illinois alternative music scene. The poetic lyrics and dynamic and upbeat rhythms are what the band builds on to make great music. Though they only have a few songs released at the moment, they should have a full length album out in the fall.

Bizness by Tune Yards
Tune Yards is one of the most interesting bands I have ever heard. They are so unique and catchy, it’s impossible not to have their songs stuck in your head all day long. One thing that is special about this band is that when they play live, they create drum loops on the spot to create the rhythm of each song. I also recommend watching the official music video for this song, it will amaze you.

Bad Kids by Lady Gaga
No, you can’t move to the lower east side of Manhattan, play underground pop shows, or wear a hot-pink leotard in public. Good thing we have Lady Gaga to live vicariously through. This song describes everything great about being young, wild, and free, which is what college life is essentially about. Though rebelling may not be an option, listening to Gaga’s music will encourage you to. I always play this song before a night out on the town for inspiration.

All of the songs mentioned here are available on iTunes.
