8 AM classes are not fun; that is a fact. After having gone to sleep exhausted at 11 PM the night before, you may be tempted to roll out of bed and head over to class in your PJs. But remember when your mom used to get you ready for school? She made sure you wore a cute pink dress and matching shoes. She made sure your hair was done with a cute bow. Why? She was teaching you one of the most important lessons of your life: dress to impress.

The way you dress is the first thing people notice. Even before having a conversation with someone, they have already formulated an opinion based on how you are dressed. This doesn’t mean that you need to spend outrageous amounts of money on clothes. As long as you are well put together, you’re good to go!

What does it mean to be well put together? Let’s start with clothes. Always remember to try your clothes on in the fitting room before buying them. Make sure they fit properly. Wearing something that is too small or too big will come off as sloppy. Once you buy clothes, take good care of them. If something says “dry clean only”, don’t throw it in the wash. Make sure to iron your clothes. Neat, crisp attire can go along way. Next, make sure your hair is well-kept. You don’t need to spend 20 minutes doing it every morning, but brushing through it to keep the frizz down is a good idea. Try using some dry shampoo to keep it looking fresh if you don’t have time to wash it. And lastly, shoes. While you want your shoes to look cute, comfort is just as important. No one want to be limping around all day because their shoes are painful.

If you’re reading this thinking “I don’t need to impress anyone” or something along the lines of that, yes, you are right. But with that being said, dressing well will not only make you look presentable, but it will change your outlook for the day. Just like you can trick your brain into thinking you’re happy by smiling, you can trick your body into being more productive by looking presentable! So ditch the sweatpants and concert tee for a pair of black jeans and cardigan for a happier, more fruitful college experience!
