Candy Hearts and Sprinkles

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

Middle school pretty much sucked the entire way through, but one thing stayed consistently wonderful: the Valentine’s Day parties.

You know the ones before Valentine’s Day became what guy liked you, or who was buying who a rose. When all was candy and candy was all. When you gave out cards even to the people you didn’t like or maybe even hated in that childish, pre-teen way.

And, isn’t that what it’s all about? I think we had it right as kids. I mean, rose petals are nice and stuff, but give me a Charlie Brown Valentine and a sugar cookie with sprinkles, please.

But more importantly, love is something truly beautiful when we find it inside ourselves to share that feeling with everyone. Sappy as it is, imagine for a second, a world where we all took a day to show love, not just to those closest to us, but to everyone.

My freshman year in college, I had a friend give me a Valentine with a little bag of candy. It was the kind that you get in a box of 24 Valentine’s, and the theme was food. It said something like, “You’ve gotta PIZZA my heart.” And of course, it had a drawing of a pizza on it with the cutest smiling face.

I certainly wasn’t expecting this, as it had been years since I’d received that type of Valentine. On another note, I’ve never had a Valentine in the traditional romantic sense, so my friend’s gesture really touched me.

This Valentine’s Day, I encourage you all to show love any way that you can and to everyone that you can. Channel the energy of your inner child, and there’s no telling what kind of magic can happen.
