Here at UIC, we celebrate Earth by devoting an entire month to it. Here are 5 ways you can be green during Earth month!

1.) Better World Books — donate old/new books you no longer need to better the literacy of the Earth. Better World Books strives to put literacy within reach of people around the world. Grab books and put them in the designated drop boxes located in SCE, Library, UH, TBH, BSB, JST, Honors College, student dorms (CMN, CMW, CMS).   All day April 1, 2013-May 10, 2013. It’s that simple to make a difference. http://www.betterworldbooks.co…

2.) Everyone says you’re supposed to drink 8 glasses of water per day, so go to your nearest store and buy a reusable water bottle that is BPA free to have water with you at all times. It saves you money, and some have built in filters to keep your water clean no matter where you are. They can run anywhere from $10 to $30 and come in a variety of styles and colors, so you can add a personal touch to your backpack this season.

3.) Want to add some green to your living quarters? Home Depot is in the process of setting up their plant nursery. Go in and grab some flowers to pot. Whether you have a yard or not, planting flowers can be inexpensive and used to decorate in or outdoors.

4.) Another option to being more green is to eat vegetables! Try a fun new recipe on earth day. Vegetarian Times provides recipes of all kinds to strike your fancy. Even better, get some exercise in if the store’s within walking distance. http://www.vegetariantimes.com/

5.) We’ve all caught ourselves leaving the lights on when no one’s home. Try and cut down on your electricity use. You know you don’t use your toaster every day, so why not unplug it along with other infrequently used appliances. It’s green and it can save money on your electricity bill.

With these simple tips, being green can fit into anyone’s life. Grab your friends and have fun changing up your normal routine while helping save the Earth.
