5 Things You Should Be Thanking Your Mom For

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

Behind every successful person, is a strong and encouraging mother.

At least, that’s my case. As much as we knock heads about whether or not my future suits my potential, I look up to my mother as someone for guidance and strength. As cliché as it sounds, she’s my best friend. My person. My motivator. My supporter. Although she doesn’t like me saying this, I wouldn’t be this far in college if it weren’t for her. She has sacrificed so much for her children and has molded each every one of us into the strong people we are today. She has done so much for us that it’s crazy to think at times how she did it: going to school to obtain her nursing degree, going back for her MBA (graduating in May of this year), buying a house, sending us to college and doing all of this as a single mom. Sometimes, my life gets so busy that I don’t really tell my mom I appreciate her or really thank her. Sometimes, we forget to call, hang out with our moms because of how crazy college life can become. But, sometimes, we need to take a step back and realize how much they love us and how much they care for us. They do what is in our best interest. Most of all, we forget to thank our moms for just being there.

So here are a few things you should thank your mom for:

1. Thank you mom for letting me vent to you.

Life can get super confusing, especially in college. You are finding yourself, discovering your passions, figuring out what you want to do for the rest of you life can be DEFINITELY overwhelming. Just when you thought you may not be able to breathe in this ocean called college, who is there for you? You guessed it, your mom. She will talk you through all your struggles, all of your worries and will continue to remind you how proud she is of you, and sometimes, you just need that to get you out of the abyss.

2. Thank you for always being there when things go wrong.

Sometimes we lose friends or our significant others break up with us for no reason, we get a bad grade on an exam, or life seems to be going south. Our moms remind us of our worth and our potential in this life because they know exactly what we hold; they know our hearts and our minds. I mean for god sakes they raised us and are continuing to mold us, they know us best, and they know what we deserve and how hard we work.

3. Thank you for knowing exactly how to cheer us up.

Whenever we are sad or sick, our moms exactly know how to make us feel better. Whether that is making your favorite Puerto Rican dish or grabbing the Nyquil from the top cabinet, they know how to make you feel better. Especially with the food part.

4. Thank you for being our biggest motivators.

They cheer you on in everything you put your mind to, whether that be going to all your soccer games or even coming to that big speech you have to give, they will be there front row with a big sign, rooting you on in your dreams.

5. Thank you for your sacrifices.

They have sacrificed so much to make ensure our success and happiness. My mom sacrificed her own sanity by going back to school to give us a better life. To give us a role to follow and to prove that nothing, absolutely nothing is impossible. Those sacrifices taught be how to be independent, how to be kind and compassionate and to be hungry for learning and ambition. Our moms sacrifice what they can for their children. It is important as young adults to recognize those sacrifices and thank them for those.

We need to remind our mothers how much we appreciate them. They are our support and our guidance. They are our providers and our motivators. They are our best friends. So this one is for you Mom, thank you.
