5 Books to Read This Spring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

With spring here and school almost over, a lot of us are about to have much more free time on our hands. Grab one (or all) of these 5 books to take with you to the beach or park to read on a sunny day. There’s about to be a lot more of them soon! Don’t forget to take advantage of Chicago Public Libraries to read all these books for free.

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
“You think you know, but you have no idea” should be the tagline for this book. Flynn takes crazy-psycho female to a whole new level with this ridiculous mystery. It’s kind of lengthy, but once you start reading you will not be able to stop. Never have I read a book that has made my jaw literally drop, but it’s that good. This book has shot to the top of my favorite list, and I can’t wait to re-read it. Also, rumor has it that a film may be in the works, so read before it hits theaters!

Everyday Psychokillers by Lucy Corin

A little out there, a little weird, but a lot interesting. This novel takes you through the narrator’s process of growing up in a culture obsessed with violence. It might not make complete sense chapter to chapter, but the ending makes everything come together to form a bigger picture. A must-read!

Whatever You Think, Think the Opposite by Paul Arden

This is one of my favorite books of all time. A super fast read (I think I finished it in 30 minutes), this book with short, motivational quips and pictures will be just what you need to start your summer. Stuck in a rut? Stressed about school? Life a little too heavy on your shoulders? Go outside, find a beautiful view of the skyline, kick back and read this book. It may or may not change your life a little bit. Any book that encourages bad decisions is one I can certainly get on board with.

Laura Lamont’s Life in Pictures by Emma Straub

I haven’t personally read this one, but it was on Vogue’s Standout Fiction list. So I think it’s safe to assume that it’s marvelous. The description reads, “The enchanting story of a midwestern girl who escapes a family tragedy and is remade as a movie star during Hollywood’s golden age.” Adding it onto my read list, you should too!

An Object of Beauty by Steve Martin
Written by SNL alum Steve Martin, this novel gives a very realistic look into the art world. There are countless references to real artisits and designers, which gives the book a genuine quality and makes the story of Lacey Yeager, the main character, that much more believable. The storyline is awesome and the characters are extremely likable, despite the decisions they make.
