5 Annoying Things About Being the Younger Sibling

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

I grew up the youngest of four siblings. People seem to think that the youngest of the family is all fun and games. They’ve got it wrong. Here are 5 of the most annoying things that come with being the younger sibling:

1.    We never grow up

At least according to our families right? Our parents and older siblings always baby you no matter how old you are. In a way, being the youngest makes your family see you as a little kid. Come on mom, I’m 19-years-old, I think I can cross the street by myself.

2. We miss out on things because our parents have gotten lazy

A baby book? No. I don’t have one of those, my older sister does, though. Since they’ve done it all before your parents don’t put in a lot of effort in some places. Yeah, it’s not the end of the world, but don’t you wish you had that baby book sometimes?

3. “Are you ___’s sister/brother?”

Nine times out of ten, you go to the same high school and middle school that your other siblings went to. The teacher can tell you’re related because either you look just alike or they just recognize the last name. On the first day of school you’re bombarded with questions about your siblings. Sometimes it gets so bad they don’t even bother to learn your name – they just call you by your last name.

4. We’re put under more pressure based on what they did before us

You have to do well in the Spelling Bee because Jordan killed it three years ago. It’s already hard enough being under pressure from your family to do things, it only gets worse when you’re also being compared to someone else.

5. People expect us to make the same decisions our siblings did

You sure you don’t want to have a blue prom dress? Your sister wore blue. Because why wouldn’t you want to imitate your older sibling’s every move? That’s right, because you’re your own person! This is probably the worst thing about being the youngest.

Despite all of this there still are some perks. What are the odds that your dad while walk past your older sibling and tell you to wash the dishes?
