3 Tips to Help You Focus on Homework

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

We are all victims of getting distracted and finals are coming soon. If your studying habits aren’t working so great, or maybe you still lose focus, try these three tips to get the most out of your homework time.

Tip #1: Unless you need a computer, get it as far from you as possible. You have easy access to Facebook, YouTube, and Her Campus articles so 5 harmless minutes turns into an hour. This includes your phone, but if you are going to listen to music then put your phone a little further away from you and turn off the screen on your computer so you won’t be tempted with a new FB notification.

Tip #2: If you can focus on homework while listening to music then go for it. If you lose focus because you are singing along then try to find the instrumental song on YouTube. You can also get a station on Pandora with instrumental music to not have to go back and search for more songs on YouTube. There are certain artists that do non-lyrical music so try to find one that you like and start the radio. I recommend a Ratatat station on Pandora for upbeat instrumental music to get you pumped and ready to hit the books if Beethoven makes you sleepy.

Tip #3: You eat in the kitchen, watch TV in the living room, sleep in your bed, study in your desk, etc. If you do homework in the living room then you will feel the need to watch TV. If you study on your bed then you will feel the need to go to sleep, just because that’s what your body has been doing every time you go to bed. Try to do all your homework on your desk or anywhere with a table that is fit as a study area.
