3 Tips For Female Empowerment And How You Can Have It All

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UIC chapter.

The pompous and seemingly inconclusive phrase ‘having it all’ is rather complex and multifaceted in nature. Simply put, it is a sociocultural pressure frequently felt by many modern day women in our contemporary society. The pressure entails and/or encourages women to possess ‘everything’, including a hearty family with a multitude of children, a dependable job conducive to societies gender ideals, a devoted and life-long partner, an aesthetically appealing and luxurious wardrobe, and much more. At best, the phrase is a formidable and strenuous challenge. At its worst, it can prompt women to spiral into a cycle of self-doubt and self-pity, encouraging some to perceive the world as uncontrollably stress-inducing and unnerving. Other women may become uncertain; they may become fearful or doubtful that their lofty goals are something that they can truly attain. How could you possibly have it all? You can’t, right? WRONG.

I am here to relieve women of such troublesome social coercions and lift these self-inflicted burdens, providing them with much needed comfort and reassurance. Breaking away from the stringent, unbending definition of having it all (kids, house, partner), I intend to bolster their spirits and reassure our young, hard-working women that ‘having it all’ is an unquestionably attainable conviction. Without a shadow of undue doubt, women can undoubtedly create a comfortable life full of self-fulfillment, self-satisfaction and gratitude for themselves. As one would expect, there is, however, one small caveat to the equation. Some may even call it trickery or artful duplicity, but that in itself is absolute nonsense.

The answer is almost expectantly simplistic. You can ‘have it all’ but you must first create your own subjective meaning to the preceding assertion. Simply put, what does ‘having it all’ mean to you? Only when one intimately defines this statement for oneself can he or she begin to successively work towards a definitive goal. In other words, the notion of ‘having it all’ is completely dependent upon one’s sole interpretative definition, including one’s established goals and aspirations.

Some wise, artful tactics to ‘have it all’:

1. Remove all doubt.

Believe in your personal abilities and intelligence. You can do it! Likewise, encourage others around you to adopt a similar ideology. Work fearlessly and confidently in the direction of your dreams.

In the words of Theodore Roosevelt himself, “Believe in yourself and you’re (already) halfway there.”

2. Work diligently and hurdle through the necessary obstacles.

Possibly far more important than true fearless and confidence, one must be fully prepared to devote countless hours of laborious effort in the pursuit of their aspirations. Through these sacrifices and tiresome hours, one garners a sound understanding that nothing worth achieving comes easily. Everything in life and all worthy accomplishments involve sacrifices and their due diligence. In this manner, we learn to appreciate our accomplishments and our slow (but invaluable) path towards success.

“Nothing in the world is worth having or worth doing unless it means efforts, pain, (and) difficulty…” -Theodore Roosevelt

3. Do not rest on your laurels.

Resist complacency; always aspire to improve and better oneself.
