Every time I open Instagram I see another “Transformation Tuesday” or “Motivational Monday” post that makes me want to stop stuffing my face with ice cream and get to the gym. The thing is, I used to love going to the gym. However,  it began to feel like everyone else was abandoning the ellipticals and treadmills for free weights and squat bars. While that’s fine for others, the only issue I have with that is that I hate lifting.

Of course I want booty gains, but not enough to get out of bed for them. What I am willing to get out of bed for is a nice, long, stress relieving run. Nothing is more calming for me than getting lost in a good podcast (I highly recommend S-Town!) for a few miles.

Trust me, I’ve tried the whole mind over matter thing ,but I always find that I can’t stick to a good workout regime if I hate what I’m doing. So, the solution to my problem has been to screw it. I decided to find ways to work out that I enjoy. Maybe they aren’t the traditional ways to build muscle ,but they work for me and that’s all that matters. By branching out and trying new types of workouts I’ve been able to fall in love with working out again! I run, do yoga, and sometimes even incorporate some piyo when I’m feeling like a pretzel.

If working out by yourself is not for you, the rec offers a great variety of classes throughout the day so you’re bound to find some that will fit your schedule. My advice is to just ignore what everyone tells you and do what you love to do. You’ll actually enjoy your workout and eventually start looking forward to them. There’s no way to describe the way it feels to be dripping sweat after a killer workout. It’s the kind of satisfaction you’ll crave.

It only takes 2-8 months to form a habit. Start now.

I am a senior at the University of Houston studying Interpersonal Communication and Psychology. Talking 100 words a minute without taking a breath is my specialty, and although I can't type as fast (not yet, anyway) I hope to change the world with words just like Carrie Bradshaw. I enjoy Sidney Shledon novels, 3 hour baths, and SATC reruns. Follow me on Instagram and Twitter!  @ksana2
