Between your parents signing you up and you taking your own interest, you have probably tried so many things in your lifetime. It’s no surprise either; there so many interesting things to do in your spare time! While it is tempting to use that time for naps and Internet surfing, here are three reasons why you should keep up with hobbies:

1. Build Self-Esteem & Relieve Stress

It has been shown hobbies can promote great mental health! Your hobby is your oasis.

2. Meeting People Is Easier

There are plenty of people who share your passion, and even form clubs because of it. Not only this, but hobbies make great conversation topics, so there is a lot less awkwardness when meeting new people.

3. Increase Focus & Concentration

Hobbies you a new challenge, and it will be without the negative stress from work.  Concentration produces neurotransmitters that creates hormones to retain interest, focus and spark enthusiasm. Your brain will have a way to work in new ways that won’t bring you down.

So, if you had a hobby but let it go, pick it up again. Don’t be afraid to try a lot of things until you find a hobby that you absolutely adore.

Allison is a sophomore English major and Education minor at the University of Houston. A bookworm and an artist at heart, she loves cliche quotes and all things nerdy. You can usually find her curled up on in a comfy chair or sitting against a wall working on things from her social media job at Zulees to her hopeful novel. When not glued to her phone, she loves to work with her Rotaract and Rotary club to better the community.
