This Day in History (1/28)

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UH chapter.

As the first month of 2018 comes to a close, now seems the perfect time to reflect.

Looking back in history, how were people finishing out the first month of the year? Were they dealing with the same issues we deal with today? Were political conditions just as fraught? Were people taking to the streets to protest injustice just as they are now?

Today, we will be reflecting on five key events that occurred on 28th January in the past.

1.) 28 January 1813 – Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” is published by Thomas Egerton in the United Kingdom.

2.) 28 January 1887 Engineer and architect Gustave Eiffel begins construction on the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

3.) 28 January 1933 – The name “Pakistan” is coined by Choudhry Rahmat Ali and gradually accepted by Muslims in the Indian sub-continent who use it to push for a separate Muslim homeland in South Asia.

4.) 28 January 1985 – Charity single “We Are the World” is recorded by supergroup USA for Africa (Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie and other pop stars)

5.) 28 January 2011 – Hundreds of thousands of protesters fill the Egyptian’s streets against the Hosni Mubarak’s regime in demonstrations referred to as the “Friday of Anger”.

As we approach the second month of 2018, we must keep history in mind as we fight for a fair world.

Happy Sunday, readers.
