Since I started college in early August, I’ve changed up my beauty routine and have seen changes that make me wish I would have changed it sooner. Simplifying my skin and hair regime creates an easier morning for me, which I need to be able to get up, get ready, eat, do a little studying, and arrive to my first class by 9 a.m.

My face routine has a significant role in my life. Over the past few months, I have decided that I don’t want to use all of the big brands, such as Clean and Clear and Neutrogena, anymore. I wanted to go for a more natural route. It started with washing my face with African Black Soap. I have bad acne, especially in high school, so this soap means everything to me because of the positive results I’ve seen. After seeing results from the soap, I decided that I wanted to continue with making my products better for my skin. My college routine now consists of washing my face with SheaMoisture’s African Black Soap, toning with Thayers’ Alcohol-free Unscented Witch Hazel Toner, applying Derma E’s Scar Gel for acne scars, and moisturizing with shea butter.

To improve my overall skin, I wanted to go back to products for sensitive skin. I have sensitive skin, so when I was using washes and lotions from brands like Pink and Soap and Glory in late high school, it definitely wasn’t benefitting my skin. Although I loved the way they smelled, I knew I wanted to use better products for me in college. I currently use Dove’s Sensitive Skin Body Wash and Aveeno’s Active Naturals Skin Relief 24 Hour Moisturizing Lotion to wash and moisturize with. I also take it a step further and wash my clothes with Tide Pods Free and Gentle and dry them with Bounce Free and Gentle Fabric Softener Sheets.

For my hair routine, I wanted it to be simpler and more consistent. I have curly and thick natural hair, so it can get crazy at times. In the past, I would use several different products that I would switch depending on the day and what I felt like using. I wanted to change that and make my hair follow a simple and consistent regime. I currently wash my hair with SheaMoisture’s Coconut and Hibiscus Curl and Shine Shampoo and Conditioner, and I apply coconut oil and SheaMoisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie.

Since moving to college and switching up my beauty routine, I’ve noticed positive changes in my skin and hair from the products I’ve started using consistently. Without the need to limit the extensive list of products that I used in high school, I wouldn’t have been able to find better face, skin, and hair products for me.
