How to Reduce Itching and Swelling of Mosquito Bites

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UGA chapter.

Even though we have entered into September, summer isn’t quite done with us yet; and neither are these mosquitos. It’s a constant drag not knowing when mosquitos decide to attack your skin, and then leaving you scratching two minutes later. Nobody wants a swollen, itchy bump on their body, so why even deal with it in the first place?

No, there’s not a way to completely prevent mosquitos from biting you, but there is definitely a way to reduce itching and swelling. By using this technique, your motto will no longer be, “a scratch a day keeps the mosquitos away.” Instead, you’ll do little to no scratching, and possibly even forget a mosquito ever bit you!

For this so-called miracle to take place, you’ll only need two products. The best part is, you most likely have at least one of these items sitting around your house, but if not, you can find both anywhere from the Dollar Store to Walmart! This way you’re able to spend based on a price range you’re comfortable with. So what are the names of these miracle workers?

  1. Rubbing alcohol
  2. Vapor rub (also known as: chest rub, Vicks)

Seems really random, I know, but follow these steps and maybe you’ll appreciate my randomness.

First, you will put the rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball or something that can be used to apply the rubbing alcohol on the mosquito bite. This will clean any dirt or germs on the mosquito bite, and open the pores around it, which will help penetrate the vapor rub when you apply it.

As I’m sure you’ve guessed, you now apply the vapor rub. The reason this helps is because vapor rub, like toothpaste, has menthol as an ingredient. Menthol is known to reduce pain and discomfort. (SIDE NOTE: I do not recommend using toothpaste on your mosquito bite because not only will you have a random white splotch on your body, but also because toothpaste isn’t made to be applied to skin like vapor rub. SIDE-SIDE NOTE: Remember what happens when you apply toothpaste to a pimple? If you don’t know…just know it’s not good for your skin and can sometimes burn or dry out your skin. The best thing is to just stay away from toothpaste altogether.)

Well, that’s it! After you’ve applied both substances, watch it work its magic almost instantly! Some of you may be familiar with just applying vapor rub to mosquito bites instead of both rubbing alcohol and vapor rub, but I believe by using both, it’s an even bigger relief and you’ll definitely notice the difference when you do use both. So go relieve yourself of itchiness and enjoy the outdoors after 6pm without any worries!
