Female Artists You’ll Fall in Love With

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UGA chapter.

Throughout history, women have sadly been overlooked in the art world. Women’s art has been referred to as craft, and been viewed as less superior than men’s work. It’s about time we started supporting and respecting all the talented female artists. The following are all women whose amazing work you definitely need to see.

Sarah Sitkin

Sarah Sitkin grew up in Burbank, California, and is a sculptural artist based in Los Angeles. At an early age, she was inspired by sfx artists who would come into her grandpa’s shop, where she would see their masks, models, and sculptures. Her work depicts human body parts, twisted skin, and organs crafted with extreme realistic detail, morphed and manipulated into unsettling and grotesque positions and forms. She uses silicone, plaster, resin, latex, and clay to achieve intriguing but unsettling works of art. Some of her inspiration comes from directors who use silent, strong imagery, including Stanley Kubrick. She even says, “each image that has emotional significance to me has a sound to it. It could be a buzzing, crackling, or distant humming sound. It’s different for every piece.”

Petra Collins

Petra Collins, 23, is a Toronto-born photographer who started photography at 15 years old. Using only 35 mm film, Collins’ work is dreamy, feminine, and mysterious. Her use of color, colored lighting, and neon, give her photos a unique aesthetic. She has shot for prestigious publications including Vogue, i-D, and Elle, and has shot for campaigns including Calvin Klein, Levis, and Adidas. Most of Collins’ subject matter deals with all that comes with being a woman, from teenage years to sexuality to the female body. Her series “24 Hour Psycho” encompassed the difficulty and sexism woman face while having a mental illness. Petra Collins art is hypnotizing, thought-provoking, and inspiring.

Mayan Toledano and Julia Baylis created Me and You as a fashion collaboration based on their friendship and being girls. Their work is very feminine and carefree… Think glossy lips, pink panties, kiss prints, soft skin, and glittery stickers. A prominent part of their brand is the word “Feminist,” put on everything from underwear to shirts, in an attempt to make the important word obvious, relatable, natural, and less stigmatized. When creating pieces, the pair takes into consideration how the garment would look photographed, and even collaborate with the brilliant Petra Collins.

Laura Callaghan’s art is bright, bold, detailed, and fun. Her hand drawn pieces are created using watercolor, indian ink, and isograph pen. The Irish-born, Southeast London-based illustrator’s comic-like, cartoon style artworks are character-driven, and are filled with symbols and clues which give depth and narrative to her art. The use of countless details give personality and story to the two-dimensional figures. Bright colors, fun prints, and female characters are standard in Callaghan’s fun, lively, emotive art.

Make sure to keep up with, and look further into all of these inspiring, insightful, talented artists, and keep on supporting women in the art world, and women in every aspect of life.
