5 Life Lessons Learned From Jane the Virgin

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UGA chapter.

Jane the Virgin has been giving us all the feels since it first aired on the CW in 2014. Her accidental pregnancy seems improbable but with the combination of Jane’s quirkiness, her strong family and of course, her attractive beaus, we are all addicted to this show and can’t wait for more. From watching the first three seasons of Jane’s journey, we learned a few things that we could apply to our daily lives.

1. Never Let an Unexpected Challenge Stop You From Pursuing Your Dreams

Life is always going to throw you unexpected curve-balls. If you let a challenge prevent you from attaining your goals, you will never achieve anything in life. Jane could have let having a baby derail her life, but instead it made her a better and stronger person. There’s always going to be a hurdle that you have to jump through, but that’s just life. The successful people in the world have had their fair share of failures but the difference was made when they got back up from their failures and tried again until they were the successful person we know today. Their intelligence and skill only played a small factor in their eventual successes.

2. Take Care of Yourself, Both Mentally and Physically

Rogelio is the perfect example of this because he takes care of himself to an excessive level. Although you don’t have to take care of yourself to quite as high of standards as Rogelio, taking care of yourself in little ways demonstrates to the world that you respect yourself and therefore they should respect you. Also, taking care of yourself is good for your overall mental and physical health because these are extremely important to living a healthy and happy life.

3. Stand by Your Choices, Even If They Turn Out to Be Wrong

Choices are what define you and if we’re being realistic here, we don’t always make all the right choices. Sometimes, these choices can bring about negative emotions such as shame or guilt or even make us question our entire lives. But at the end of the day, we shouldn’t hold ourselves to such a high standard because everyone makes mistakes and not the best choices. What’s important is that we stand by our decisions and take responsibility for their consequences even if they’re negative. What matters is how you move forward and look to the future, not the bad decisions of the past!

4. Love Comes in Many Forms, Though Some Are Unexpected

Jane and Petra’s relationship embodies this lesson. Despite all the animosity between them and all the things they could disagree over, they still manage to become close friends and be there for one another when Rafael goes to jail. This lesson is extremely important to remember in our every day lives. It is also even more important to keep your eyes and heart open to receive these many forms of love as they are all unique and life changing in their own ways.

5. Be a Strong, Independent Woman and Always Believe In Yourself

Believing in yourself is always a must. A goal may seem impossible to achieve, but it’s the people who believe in themselves who achieve those dreams they didn’t think were possible. It’s a strange and crazy world that we live in, but that one thing that is constant is your belief in yourself! It takes a lot of courage and confidence in herself to raise her unexpected child and pursue her writing career. If Jane didn’t have a strong support network and belief in herself, none of this would have been possible.
