UFashion: Gainesville Fashion Week Highlights

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

In all honesty, I wasn’t sure what to expect for the seventh season of Gainesville Fashion Week, especially with its change in venue to the Mustang Hangar at the University Air Center. But what awaited me inside was a dark atmosphere with light mostly shining on a runway surrounded by men and women clad in their best for an evening full of talent.

These are just a few of the emerging designers who showcased their collections during this year’s GFW — you’ll soon be proud to say you knew all about them first.

ZannieKini You can thank Alexandra “Zannie” Jones, a UF sophomore, for your new bikini obsession. She’s the designer behind the brand called ZannieKini Swimwear, which is composed of custom handmade swimsuits. Attendees of the runway show got a glimpse of her “endless summer” collection, which included many fun, colorful styles and prints. Get your hands on one of these cute pieces just in time for Summer Break on Etsy or by contacting Zannie herself for a custom order.

Francine Elizabeth This 21-year-old designer is a Gainesville native who has been showing her collections during GFW since she was 18, but she has been designing clothes since she was just 7 years old. Her sleek, clean pieces are definitely something a woman in her early 20s could wear to command the attention of any room she stepped into. Check out the rest of her amazing work over on her website. She also has an Etsy page if you’re interested in purchasing one of her pieces.

Xiaolin Julia Chew’s collection may have been the last collection to be shown, but it was definitely not the least. You could clearly see the talent and the heart that went into her autumn/winter 2014 collection. From the brightly toned, peacock-inspired dresses to her darker, feathered evening gowns, I think it’s fair to say we could be expecting to see her collections on much larger runways in the near future. If you want to get a better sense of her work make sure to check out her portfolio. And don’t forget to visit her on Etsy as well.

Keep looking good, collegiettes™!
