Pin it or Pass: Wood Decorations

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

With the end of the year approaching, I’ve been searching Pinterest for cute and cheap, graduation presents. I found this little find under the DIY board. Putting a cute picture of you and your friend on a block of wood is a little creative spin on giving someone a generic picture frame. I love rustic decorations, so I was excited to give this one a try.

What you’ll need:

  • Wood, can be purchased at Michaels for under $2
  • Decoupage, also found at Michaels for around $10 (but it goes a long way)
  • A paint brush
  • A picture printed on regular paper

Step 1: Take the block of wood and apply the decoupage to one side. There are several different types of decoupage, but I went with one that didn’t have a gloss in it. I didn’t want the wood to lose its texture.

Step 2: Place the photo facing down onto the decoupage. This is actually was way more difficult than I thought it would be. Make sure you get all of the wrinkles out. Mine had some major bubbles, so we’ll see how badly it distorts the final product.

Step 3: Let it sit over night.

Step 4: Take a wet rag to the wood, and get all of the paper off. After this process, I was a little disappointed in how the picture turned out. I used a color photo, and the wood started to blend in to my skin tone. The picture was kind of faint and hard to see.

Step 5: Dry off the wood, and apply another coat of decoupage. Let it dry.

Finished Product:
Remember when I told you to try to get the bubbles out… Yeah, this is what mine looks like. It’s definitely not as good as the one on Pinterest. But what do you think? Would you Pin it or Pass?

Rating: 2 out of 5 pins

Why it’s not a 5: If you attempt this pin, I sincerely suggest you use a black and white photo. I attempted several color photos at the same time while making this, and each one of them ended up looking like a distorted mess. I also suggest you use a picture with minimal clutter and background. For a pin that takes more than 24 hours to complete, it might be better to pass on this one.
