Mane ‘n Tail: Hair Growth Success or Fail?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Although short, chin-length bobs are creeping their way back onto the fashion scene, in the college world, most still covet long, luxurious locks. But sometimes hair does not cooperate with fashion and refuses to grow! This is leading many girls to experiment with novel express hair-growing fads, such as using the horse shampoo “Mane ‘n Tail.”

My roommate and I recently began researching ways to make our hair grow as we could not stand having medium length hair any longer and decided to give Mane ‘n Tail a trial run. In the past few weeks, I feel that my hair has gotten a little longer; however Mane ‘n Tail might lack the conditioning elements other brands of hair products offer. From all the articles I have read, the biggest component of hair growth is having healthy hair and leading a healthy lifestyle, but here are some of the top tips I have found (Disclaimer: These are tried but not necessarily true methods; everyone’s hair is unique):

As mentioned earlier, Mane ‘n Tail Shampoo and Conditioner are good products to use in the beginning of your hair growth pursuits. You should be able to find Mane ‘n Tail at drugstores or Wal-Mart and it is inexpensive compared to other hair products. Although the use of Mane ‘n Tail is beneficial to hair growth, it is also encouraged to not wash your hair as often when you are trying to grow it out.

Get your hair trimmed regularly; it is better to have healthier hair that is a tad shorter than for it to be long and ragged. Split ends are never cute! You can also just trim the ends yourself if you are more daring. Just remember if you go to a salon, make sure your stylist knows you are trying to grow out your hair and only want the ends trimmed — nothing more!

It might be difficult to resist, but if you can refrain from straightening your hair as often, this will keep your hair healthier and ultimately aid in hair growth. The same goes for blow-drying — try to let your hair dry naturally.

Try to never put your hair in tight little braids, as this increases the chances of hair breakage. Also, try not to wear your hair up as often; this might be more difficult especially with all the Gainesville humidity. If you must throw your hair up, try not to make your ponytail or bun super tight as this adds to stress on your hair.

Although I have yet to try this for myself, many endorse oils for hair growth. Both almond and coconut oil help moisturize your hair, making it healthier and therefore more likely to grow.

My roommate has started taking prenatal vitamins in addition to using Mane ‘n Tail. Although a lot of hair growth during pregnancy is due to factors other than the prenatal vitamins, they are definitely something to research for yourself and decide if they are worth giving a try.
