I Did a Juice Cleanse and Here’s What Happened

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

I was recently talking to one of my good friends, who looks absolutely fabulous, and she told me she did a cleanse and casually lost 10 pounds in 10 days. I immediately looked up the cleanse, ordered the book, went to Trader Joe’s to get ingredients and started the cleanse a couple of days later. I want to highlight and inform everyone about my interesting experience on this cleanse. I am going to be brutally honest and admit that it was probably the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

Day 1: My first thought was, “How bad could this possibly be?” Pretty bad. I felt weak, and I was starving because apparently my body couldn’t go without Chipotle for longer than 12 hours. The day felt extremely long, and I was dreading finishing my night with just another smoothie instead of a fulfilling dinner.

Day 2: I woke up feeling really weak and sweaty. Great. I instantly jumped to the conclusion that I was coming down with something because I already felt less bloated and thinner. The cleanse calls for no caffeine, and I found myself seriously craving coffee. I was snacking more than I did on day one and was extremely irritable. This was probably the worst day ever.

Day 3: The biggest difference so far between the previous two mornings was that I didn’t wake up hating my life. I found that I had more energy than the past two days, but I was still unbearably hungry. Because I was doing the cleanse with a friend, we both decided maybe this course of action wasn’t the best for our bodies. I didn’t have enough energy to go to the gym, which I am used to doing every day. We decided to do a modified version and eat a full, healthy dinner instead of another smoothie.

Day 4: All I could think about was the dinner that was awaiting me. I was seriously excited to eat the frozen dinner I had in my freezer because the only whole food I had eaten in three days was raw almonds. My dinner that night was inexplicably satisfying, and I found myself much fuller than I normally would have been. The downfall to this was that I realized how much I actually missed real food.

Day 5: Today was the day I ran out of ingredients and would have to be forced into buying more fruits and vegetables. I was tired, I missed the gym and I was extremely starving. I decided it would be best for my body if I stopped the cleanse and decided to eat healthily and clean.

Day 6: I lost three pounds. It isn’t ten, and I definitely cheated on an attempt at doing half of a cleanse. I was totally okay with it.

I picked up some really great habits from this cleanse, and the book about the cleanse had great tips on managing your weight and continued weight loss. Detox tea is now part of my daily regimen, which I never thought would be a thing. I’ve kept the weight off, I am continuing to eat healthily, and I’ve never felt better. My best advice for all of you beautiful people is to do what makes you the happiest and healthiest version of yourself.
