How to Stay Safe at Away Games

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

The month of October is packed with away games, and with that comes one of the most fun college experiences: road trips. Road trips should be wonderful experiences that leave you with enduring memories. To be sure that you make the best of your trip, collegiettes™ must remember to take important safety precautions.

To help you avoid any sticky situations, we’ve compiled a few safety tips to keep your away game weekends fun.

  • Charge your phone before you leave and whenever you get a chance. You always want to be reachable when you’re in an unfamiliar place.
  • Write down a few close friends’ numbers and the address of where you’re staying on a slip of paper. Keep it in your wallet so you always have it with you.
  • Always use the buddy system. It may sound elementary, but sticking together is the safest way to explore a new place. The bigger the group, the better.
  • Carry some backup cash at all times. You should think of this as emergency money, so try not to spend everything you bring on shopping and restaurants on the first night.
  • Establish a safe meeting place. This way, if you get separated (or if a friend does), you’ll have a plan b to meet up and get back to the fun.

Remember, although road trips are fun, they can be risky. Don’t tell strangers where you’re staying or take drinks from people you do not know. Exhibit proper conduct in other college towns. No matter where you are, if you’re wearing orange and blue on game day, you represent UF. Make the Gators proud, have fun and be safe on your road trips this October!
