Fitness with Finesse: 5 Thoughts you Have When you’re Trying to Eat Healthier

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

At one point or another, we’ve all tried to eat healthier, and whether it lasted for a few months or only a few hours, we all understand the struggle. It’s hard to keep yourself on the straight and narrow when you’re trying to avoid Publix cookies and Chick-fil-A French fries. I’m sure we can all relate to these thoughts everyone has when trying to eat healthy.

1.If I just eat a small salad now, I can eat a piece of cake later.”

The classic trade-off. If you eat fewer calories now, you can eat more later, right? Wrong! Stay strong! If you eat more healthy calories now, you won’t even be hungry for cake later, so fill up on healthy and filling treats like celery and apples.

2. “Who actually eats vegetable medleys?”

Ordering healthy at restaurants will always be the ultimate challenge when trying to eat healthier. Why is the only healthy option a “vegetable medley?” And who is actually eating them? It’s best just to avoid going out to eat altogether, but because that’s nearly impossible, just order a salad or eat the vegetable medley – I can guarantee you’ll feel good about it.

3.Wow, that Chick-fil-A smells good…”

Walking by the Hub is my weakness when I’m on a health kick or anytime really. The smell wafts to you on your way to class, and you think to yourself, “I’ll just get a small fry.” Don’t let your unhealthy side win! You can stand strong, or at least start speed walking to your class.

4. “If I order Chinese food, I don’t have to get the kitchen dirty…”

Eating healthy means making a lot of your own dinners, and sometimes, cleaning the kitchen and waiting for things to cook is agony. So why not just order takeout, right? Wrong! Just think about how good you’ll feel about yourself when you choose to eat healthy.

5. “Calories don’t count after midnight, right?”

… or on holidays… or weekends. Those late-night cravings are hard to stop; a carrot really can’t replace a midnight cookie, but that just means you need to be eating a little more good stuff during the day so you don’t get hungry later. And yes, calories always count!

Eating healthy is a well-known struggle for all collegiettes, but just remember, you’re not alone in the late-night pizza cravings. Fight off the unhealthy thoughts, and get ready to feel great about your healthy habits!
