The Crafty Gator: Easter Door Hanger

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Happy Spring, Collegiettes!

The time is near for bathing suits and tanning, but we have to get through a few more weeks of flowers, egg hunts and bunnies first! This week’s craft is a great way to get you in the Easter spirit, and it also makes a fabulous gift. I’m home for Spring Break, and I gave my finished Easter Door Hanger to my mom. She loved it! Here’s how you can make one, too.

You’re going to need quite a few supplies for this one, but luckily, every component is pretty cheap. I got all my supplies at A.C. Moore, a craft store in South Florida. The basket was $1.99; the eggs were $0.99; the tulle was $2.99; and, the foam sheets were $0.49 each. I’m sure you can probably scrounge in your old craft drawer at home and find most of the supplies I used for free!

In order for this door hanger to hang properly, you have to cut your basket in half. That way, the part against the door is flat and doesn’t make the whole thing stick out too far. Grab some heavy-duty cutting tools and get to work! Just be careful to not cut the handle at all; it holds the whole thing together! Also, don’t throw any parts away. You’ll use pretty much everything.

Keep one half of the basket (the one with the handle, we’ll call it Half A) intact. Cut the bottom part off of the other half, let’s call that Half B, as in the picture below. Again, don’t throw it away!

Next, you’re going to glue the side part of Half B onto Half A. It’s already been done in the picture below, but don’t worry about how it looks since it’s going to be filled with goodies and you won’t notice the glue job. Then, glue the bottom of Half B that we cut off in the last step to the bottom. This step is optional! I did it since I didn’t want a big hole in the back of mine for goodies to fall out of. If you’re filling your basket with newspaper and just putting eggs on top, however, this step may be skipped.

Here’s a top view of what your finished basket should look like, before you put the cute stuff inside!

Finally, put a little greeting on your basket. Go ahead and be creative with it! Happy Easter, “Hoppy” Easter (maybe with some cute little bunnies), and Happy Spring are all cute options. Again, this step is optional!

As always, your creativity plays a huge part in these crafts, and I encourage you to make them your own!
Have fun and enjoy being a Crafty Gator just like me.

XOXO,
