6 “Guy Movies” Every Girl Should See

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Every time I hear the term “guy movie,” describing a movie that is targeted toward men and that women aren’t expected to enjoy, I cringe. It implies that women who do like these movies are unusual. Here’s the truth: All people can appreciate a good movie, whether it’s targeted at men or women. Below are just a few true classics that have been described as “guy movies.”

1. Kill Bill, Vol. 1 & 2
Kill Bill may come off as a movie that only men would enjoy, based on the violent title and the fact that Quentin Tarantino directs it, but it’s actually one of the best feminist flicks out there. Uma Thurman’s character is the ultimate strong female lead, and its dark comedy makes it a fun watch for everyone.

2. The Godfather
The classic of all classics, it’s crucial that every human watch this film. It’s such a cultural icon that it’s almost impossible to not recognize references to the movie — even if you haven’t seen it. Seeing The Godfather for the first time is an experience and a milestone moment in a person’s life, so if you haven’t seen it yet, get on it!

3. The Big Lebowski
This off-beat comedy created one of the most iconic characters of all time: The Dude. I’m not quite sure why this is considered a guy movie, seeing as anyone would find this movie hilarious and enjoyable.

4. Animal House
As collegiettes, I think we can all appreciate the sophomoric college humor of Animal House. This movie is filled with comedic legends like John Belushi, and I can promise it will not fail to make you laugh-cry.

5. Star Wars
A true saga, the original Star Wars is a film that everyone should see, especially in light of the new sequel coming out this Christmas! Star Wars is a staple in American popular culture, so if you’re part of the small minority who hasn’t watched it yet, you basically need to see it out of respect to ‘Merica.

6. Pulp Fiction
One of my personal favorites, Pulp Fiction is a cult classic and arguably Quentin Tarantino’s best work to date. With its witty dialogue, amazing cast, and killer soundtrack, this film will surely not disappoint.

If there’s a lesson to take away from this, it’s that you should never let arbitrary labels like “guy movie” prevent you from enjoying a great film! By the same token, boys, it’s okay to like “chick flicks.” Good writing is something everyone can appreciate.
