5 #WOKE Podcasts College Women Will Love

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

Listening to podcasts is a great pastime when you’re in commute to class, cleaning up your apartment or even making that drive back home for the weekend. If you want to get hype about intersectional feminism or learn the latest situations affecting our society, take notes from these women. They know a thing or two about the importance of staying #WOKE, acknowledging the issues concerning social and racial justice. They will not only have you laughing quietly to yourself but make you an engaged collegiette, knowledgeable about politics, sexual health and pop culture during this heightened #GRLPWR time.

1. 2 Dope Queens

Jessica Williams, The Daily Show alum, and Phoebe Robinson, a brilliant comic, partner in what is basically a stand-up comedy show. These best friends talk about everything from Red Lobster’s Cheddar Bay Biscuits to living in New York as black women. Every episode, they host people from all walks of life to tell their personal stories, allowing them to do the their own stand-up comedy routines.

2. Latino USA

This is the only national, English-language radio program produced from a Latino perspective, which not only gives you a chance to get the viewpoints from one of the largest demographics in the United States but also hear some stories from those in the community that you may not hear. One of the most recent episodes takes you into Latino Greek Life and the process of finding a Latin identity in college.

3. Guys We F****d

Talking about sex in college isn’t taboo, but it is in many societies. The name is pretty much self-explanatory. The comedic duo, Corinne Fisher and Krystyna Hutchinson interview a man they’ve slept with every week, making it equal parts honest and humorous. It’s an “anti slut-shaming podcast,” encouraging the rest of society to become more comfortable with the topic; they even landed an interview with Amber Rose.

4. The Back Talk

Poetry is a gift. Reading words that flow effortlessly off the page is a great pastime but when you’re in a time crunch and can’t find time to sit and re-read Milk and Honey, listen to The Back Talk. Brit Julious brings together the voices of women of color as they read essays, have conversations and bring light to artists who are often overlooked. The eloquence will be music to your ears.

5. Other: Mixed Race in America

Being raced in America isn’t easy; being mixed raced is just as difficult as there is often a battle to straddle two sides of identity. This series uncovers the stories of people whose parents come from two different races, cultures or countries. The podcast takes you through the history mixed-race people have faced, the struggles within their own families of being only half of something, as well as the issues confronted in romantic situations. It’s an insightful learning experience for those who are unaware of the issues many multiracial people face.
