Things to Do if You’re Staying in Town for Thanksgiving

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSB chapter.

Most of us have going home for Thanksgiving break to look forward to, but there are those who are from out of state or live at an inconvenient distance who can’t go home. Although nothing beats going home to your family, you can still have fun staying in Isla Vista! Here are a few things you could do during break:

1. Volunteer

You have so many things to be thankful for, and now is the best time to give back to the less fortunate. Whether you decide to donate some food to the Isla Vista Co-op or drop off some blankets at a local homeless shelter, every little action counts.

2. Participate in a run

While everyone else is stuffing their faces, you can be the healthy one and participate in one of the organized run/walk events in Santa Barbara, like the Thanksgiving 4 Miler!

See, Kanye knows what you should do.

3. Explore Santa Barbara

There’s so much more to do than go to the beach! Discover some new restaurants, go horseback riding, or be sophisticated and visit the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Go do something in the area that you’ve never done before.

4. Have a Friendsgiving

Gather all of your friends who also aren’t going home and have your own little Thanksgiving celebration! Hanging with your second family is the next best thing to hanging with your real family. Although the food might not be as good, it’s the effort that counts!

At least you’ll have fun!

5. Spend time with your family via Skype

If you’ll really miss your family, video chat with them! Prepare your microwavable turkey and have dinner at the table (and the computer) with the people you love most. If you can’t be with your family during Thanksgiving break, just remember: distance makes the heart grow fonder!

Hi, Collegiettes! I'm Carmen, a Communication major at University of California, Santa Barbara and one of two Campus Correspondents for UCSB. I would love to one day work in either fashion, food, tech, financial services or philanthropy. My dream is to find a job that somehow combines several of those elements. Until I get there, I'll be munching on copious amounts of Trader Joe's dried mango, jamming out to my man, Frank Sinatra, and focusing on creating intriguing content! If you like my writing, talk to me. ;)
Kirby is a recent graduate from UCSB currently living in Los Angeles. As a proud Her Campus UCSB alum, she's happy to be back on the HC team covering one of her fave shows: "The Mindy Project." On any given day you can find her with her nose in a book (let's be real - it's a Kindle). In her free time, she likes petting dogs, binge-watching TV, and eating a lot of food. Find her on Instagram: @kirbynicoleb or @GirlBossEats.
