By Yassi Hosseini

Hyper Crush is making their way up the charts with their catchy beats and unique style. As their Glow Sticks for Breakfast tour was coming to an end, they made their way up north to our very own Velvet Jones in downtown Santa Barbara.  Established roughly five years ago, Hyper Crush has gone from performing at low-key neighborhood lounges to high-end venues for huge crowds of fans. Their spectacular accomplishments are inspiring and admirable. They are unique in every aspect and particularly stand out to me because they genuinely love their fans and always make time for a meet-and-greet after their concerts.  READ MORE

We Didn’t Start the Fire: The Tradition of IV Couch-Burning

By Rachel Miller
May 14, 2012 - 3:35am

Isla Vista harbors various customs: getting too intoxicated, engaging in amorous activity, and lighting couches on fire. The vision of flames, smell of fire, and sound of ambulance sirens is all too familiar in IV. It is incredibly common to witness a traditional Isla Vista couch-burning whilst out on DP one night, especially in February during midterm-season. After a night of IV promiscuity, your pee is not the only thing that will burn--your couch will too. READ MORE

Obama Says "Yes" to Same-Sex Marriage

By Rachel Miller
May 14, 2012 - 2:06am

On Wednesday, May 9, 2012, Barack Obama went public with his endorsement of gay marriage, galvanizing his liberal base, enraging cultural conservatives, and establishing a controversial social debate for the upcoming Presidential Elections in November. For the past two years, President Obama has described his stance on gay marriage as “evolving,” leaving both liberals and conservatives with an ambiguous sense of what will come in the highly contentious debate over legalizing gay marriage. However, after strong endorsements of gay marriage from Vice President Biden and Education Secretary Arne Duncan, the public began coaxing President Obama for his stance in the debate. After days of unceasing pressure for clarity and confirmation on the issue, Obama...

By Helen Irias

A decade is defined by its political events, fashion trends, scientific breakthroughs, and Hollywood heartthrobs. If you were shown a snapshot of my room when I was twelve, it would be clear in what general year the picture was taken. The sultry scowls of Orlando Bloom, Jessie McCartney, and the Jonas Brothers are so 2005; this year, my celebrity crushes include the likes of Channing Tatum, Ryan Gosling, and Liam Hemsworth. Why is it that as times change, attractive stars flit in and out of the spotlight? What factors contribute to their rise and decline, and how have some managed to not fade away? READ MORE

Mirazozo Luminarium Lights Up UCSB

By Hannah Toutounchi
April 22, 2012 - 6:10pm

The past week, students at UCSB were lucky enough to experience the Mirazozo Luminarium, an amazing and enchanting display of radiant light and color. The Architects of Air, originally based in Nottingham, England, tour and display their exhibit to the public; Santa Barbara was their first stop in the United States. The AS Program Board planned the event for three months beforehand. Inside the inflatable sculpture, circular hallways and ceilings are illuminated with bright reds blue, and green patterns. These colors are created by the natural sunlight shining through colored plastic and emitting the vivid spectrum. In the background, a soft ethereal trance style tune played, adding to the awe-striking nature of the whole experience....

Breasts. No matter the size, no matter the shape, we all have them, and have to keep them strapped in somehow. By Rachel Miller
April 16, 2012 - 1:18am

1. Don’t be the shacker, be the “shackee.”
Being the "shackee," one who hosts a shacker, enables you to avoid the dreaded and humiliating walk-of-shame. In addition, maintaining the "shackee" status allows you to evade the "Houdini"--the immensely subtle and quick movement one must perform in order to escape from the "shackee's" house without the "shackee" waking up.
2. If you must shack it, make sure you wear a day-to-night outfit or be prepared to have a friend pick you up so you avoid the inevitable walk-of-shame.
