On October 20, 2012, Her Campus ended their College Fashion Week nationwide tour with a West Coast finale here in sunny Santa Barbara. The HC College Fashion Week Fashion Show was held at the Carrillo Recreation Center in downtown Santa Barbara, where the entire center was transformed to have a NYC night club vibe centered around the runway. Tons of collegiates and Her Campus supporters lined the doors to watch UCSB students strut their stuff on the runway. Windsor Hanger, the President, publisher, and co-founder of HerCampus, emceed the event, and promoted the theme of the fashion show for collegiates everywhere to “Upgrade Your Life!” READ MORE

Taylor Swift Songs for Every Situation

By Helen Irias
October 21, 2012 - 6:20pm

I don’t know about you, but I personally enjoy listening to music that reflects whatever mood I’m in. Whether I’m moping in self-pity or dancing with jittery excitement, music heightens the experience—especially when the singer seems to relate to exactly what you’re dealing with. And who is more relatable than Taylor Swift? It seems like that girl has been through everything and more, then written a song about it. In honor of the October 22nd release of Swift’s new album Red, here is a guide to some of her older songs to help you through a range of emotions you may feel this year: Listen to these songs when experiencing… A Happy Relationship READ MORE

Raves: Musically Driven, Monumentally Awesome

By Hannah Toutounchi
October 21, 2012 - 5:37pm

It was the summer of 2011 when I experienced my first rave in LA’s Downtown Historic Park. I remember standing in line outside the venue, the hot sun beating down, waiting eagerly to get in. Belly-baring girls in sparkly tutus and sun-tanned guys in neon tank tops surrounded me; everyone was wrapped up in this unspoken energy. As I walked inside the venue, I could feel the pulse of the bass shaking the floor and the relentless debauchery of the crowd. Was this the place to break all inhibitions? There was an air of excitement that even the most conservative young adult couldn’t resist. It was called Hard Summer, and I can honestly say that it was one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had....

#Dead. Has the Hashtag’s Day Come and Gone?

By Maya Wong
October 15, 2012 - 8:24pm

Remember the good ol’ days when“#” only meant “number” or a “pound sign”? Yeah, me either. The past two years, the “#” has had its 15 minutes of fame as the #HASHTAG. Even though the hashtag has given us the funniest of comebacks and the wittiest of jokes, it’s easy to see that the hashtag is having a slow and crucial death. All I can say is… #sorryimnotsorry. How to Lose a Creeper in 10 Seconds

By Helen Irias
October 15, 2012 - 8:05pm

You know him: the middle-aged man leering behind you in the checkout line, the slimy dude on campus asking you how it’s going, or the guy with the accent calling you “sweetheart”. Being polite in this world full of creepers has its drawbacks, and an inability to dismiss undesirable suitors is one of them. For girls like me who are hesitant to simply snap “Back off”, it is wise to keep a few one-liners in your back pocket that are sure to shut down these fellows’ advances. Keep in mind, these are only useful if you can keep a straight face. Try one—or all—of the excuses below to get out of a sticky situation: When he asks for your number: READ MORE

Why Kindergarteners Are Smarter Than Most Adults: 8 Benefits of Napping

Yawn. Go ahead, I know you’ve been fighting the urge all day. And you aren’t alone! In college, it’s normal to constantly feel sleep-deprived; that’s why Starbucks gets so much business, and why that guy in front of you in lecture is always sipping a Rockstar. While all that caffeine and sugar may give you enough jitters to make sleep impossible, they don’t even closely compare to the feeling of being well-rested. READ MORE

How to Spot a Douchebag

By Helen Irias
May 29, 2012 - 8:07pm

Douchebag (n): An individual who has an over-inflated sense of self worth, compounded by a low level of intellegence, behaving ridiculously in front of colleagues with no sense of how moronic he appears. —Urban Dictionary How many douchebags do you know? Don’t you wish that a bunch of guys’ faces didn’t just flash through your mind? How great would it be if you could tell immediately upon meeting a guy whether he is genuinely nice or if he is, in fact, a Grade A Douche? Great news: you can! Here is a beginners’ guide to identifying a douchebag. I say “beginners’” because it is by no means universal—many an elusive douchebag exists who may not match any of the criteria below. Regardless, enjoy: READ MORE

How to Select a Date for Your Date Party

By Rachel Miller
May 21, 2012 - 3:31am

It’s the end of the year and about that time that the Greek system’s sororities and fraternities have finally figured out transportation and locations just in time for their date parties. Unfortunately, you could’ve used a couple more weeks of date-party-delay because you find yourself without any potential date options. However, you have many options, so don’t fret! READ MORE

Although UCSB maintains the stigma as a party school, gleaning nicknames such as U Can Study Buzzed and University of Casual Sex and Beer, the University of California, Santa Barbara has actually skyrocketed in academics and become one of the chief hubs for scientific research in the past three decades. With five Nobel laureates on its staff, it is no surprise that UCSB has attained recognition as an exceptional research doctoral program. Our university is currently highly ranked in the National Research Council's most recent survey of research doctoral programs, placing first in the country in materials sciences based on a compendium of scores in multitudinous categories. Hyper Crush Rocks it in Santa Barbara

By Yassi Hosseini
May 15, 2012 - 10:51pm

Hyper Crush is making their way up the charts with their catchy beats and unique style. As their Glow Sticks for Breakfast tour was coming to an end, they made their way up north to our very own Velvet Jones in downtown Santa Barbara.  Established roughly five years ago, Hyper Crush has gone from performing at low-key neighborhood lounges to high-end venues for huge crowds of fans. Their spectacular accomplishments are inspiring and admirable. They are unique in every aspect and particularly stand out to me because they genuinely love their fans and always make time for a meet-and-greet after their concerts.  READ MORE
