A Millenial’s Response to Donald Trump’s Sexist Language

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCSB chapter.

Donald Trump has been under fire lately, for his toxic misogynistic comments towards women’s physical appearance—more specifically, body image. With all the body negativity circling this year’s infamous election, here are a few things to remind Donald Trump about the modern age’s true definition of beauty.

1. Confidence is the new beauty: anyone who attacks our physical appearance is not worth our time.

Does Donald Trump think that the majority of the women population enjoy being referred to as gold diggers, and incontrollable emotion machines? 47.4 percent of the American votes lie in the hands of intellectual, and career driven women who understand their own value in the professional world. His “unintentional” comments might just be the one thing he needs to cost him the election. In 2004, when he said he was irresistible to women, he didn’t take into consideration the fact that most women would not even give him a second of their time, let alone, a single glance.

2. Poise is the new beauty:  Body shaming is just like any hate, irrelevant.

Our ability to face hate as dignified women, is ten times more attractive than any model beauty standard seen in Vogue magazines. We are poised and composed women who know how to deal with our “emotional distress”. We are not uncontrollable, and we do not act recklessly on emotion alone. Staying poised and raising an argument to defend ourselves articulately is just about drop dead gorgeous.  Sorry to ruin your perceptions Donald, but we are classy.

3. Intelligence is the new beauty: Times are changing, and so is our definition of a modern beauty.

In his 2006 book Trump 101: The Way to Success, Trump wrote: “Beauty and elegance, whether in a woman, a building, or a work of art, is not just superficial or something pretty to see.” In today’s age, women who can think for themselves and strive for a stable career, are extraordinarily attractive. Trump’s belief that women cannot be anything but “something pretty to see”, is ridiculous and extraordinarily sexist. Not to mention, so last century. Intelligence is definitely the new sexy.

4. Individuality is the new beauty: It goes without saying that everyone is diverse in appearance and just as equally beautiful.

If everyone was a cardboard cutout, then probably Donald wouldn’t have anything to say about women’s bodies then. All women would look the same. All would look just as “beautiful”. But today, beauty entails more than just trying to be the mannequin displayed in retail stores. We are all individualized with our own personal styles and our own sense of beauty. It’s not up to some man in a suit to define that for the rest of society.

5. Ambition is the new beauty: If a girl says she wants to become President, who has the authority to say she can’t?

In the end, it all boils down to the 2016 Presidential Election. But most of the sexist comments he makes are about the female candidate herself. Too emotional, too reckless, and too ambitious, he says. He even went on to criticize her marraige, which was a completely shallow and superficial arguement. In April, Trump tweeted, “If Hillary Clinton can’t satisfy her husband what makes her think she can satisfy America?” That’s just wrong. Even if you are not a Hillary supporter, It’s as if, in Donald Trump’s eyes, a woman has only one duty: to serve the man. No way, not in the 21st century. Women are leading CEOs, engineers, business women who can excel in any field they choose. Women do not fall under one identity and one purpose, and it is absolutely wrong to think that way. Ambition drives great women, and great women have ambition.

Overall, the main take away is that none of these qualities are based on outer appearance. Regardless of what anyone says, your greatest and truest respecter will always be yourselves and that is what makes this generation of modern career women as beautiful as ever. Don’t let a man in a business suit tell you what your worth.
