By Hannah Toutounchi
October 11, 2011 - 1:08am

Do you ever find yourself staying away from the weight room (not only because all the iron-pumping gym-junkies will stare in suspicion), but because you think you’ll “become too muscular” or “gain a bulky appearance” from the extra muscle? Fear no more girl, because I am here to share the knowledge I gained after a quarter in the Women’s Weight Training exercise studies class offered here at UCSB (ES 1- 43E). Here are a couple myths debunked about what weight training does for a woman’s body and a some useful tips when hitting the iron yourself.

By Elizabeth Wagmeister
October 10, 2011 - 4:15am

Ole Ole Ole Ole, Gaucho, Gaucho!
Ole Ole Ole Ole, Gaucho, Gaucho! Have you missed these two Santa Barbarian words ringing in your ears over the summer? We hope so because the UCSB Gauchos are about to rally, sing and cheer for our athletes this Fall Quarter! This week, get ready to catch a double-header in men's soccer. Start your week off  throwing tortillas in Harder Stadium with a home game versus Cal State Fullerton. End your week road trippin' north up the California coast to 'boo' Cal Poly as we watch the UCSB Gauchos dominate the field. Whether or not we gain Central Coast bragging rights as we repeat history with another victory (last year's game resulted in a 2-1 Gaucho win), we will still celebrate through the streets of IV....

N'Shelle Herring '11: Panhellenic President

By Elizabeth Wagmeister
October 10, 2011 - 3:48am

Any collegiette™ student who is a member of a Greek organization understands the hard work, high stress, and time commitment that is associated with recruitment. At UCSB, nobody understands the grueling yet rewarding process more than Panhellenic Board, not to mention its President—N'Shelle Herring. Although the members of sororities are the face of recruitment, the backbone is the Panhellenic Board, the highly-committed and elected student group that runs the Greek system. In other words, rush would not be possible without  Panhellenic, and Panhellenic would not be possible without N'Shelle. This week, Her Campus UCSB got in touch with Ms. Herring to hear all of the ins-and-outs of her position and the process behind a very successful recruitment season...

What Do You Look For In a Girl? I need a girl who I can have fun with and is down to earth. I grew up on a ranch so I look for someone who isn't afraid to get dirty. She needs to be able to dress up to go out with me and my friends or be just as happy staying in and having a movie night. READ MORE

FALL QUARTER KICKS OFF WITH MADNESS

By Elizabeth Wagmeister
October 4, 2011 - 2:22am

Each Fall Quarter, the UCSB Greek System kicks of the school year with Midnight Madness, and this past weekend was no exception. Organized by the university's panhellenic board, Midnight Madness facilitates the newest Greek members to meet and greet their fellow sorority sisters and fraternity brothers throughout a night of mayhem. Each sorority follows a schedule that designates their specific time to arrive at each fraternity, but by the end of the night, the orderly intended agendas are not-so-organized as the masses commence in a chaotic celebration at whichever house they please. Urban Dictionary for Freshmen at UCSB

By Michelle Tokunaga
October 3, 2011 - 4:42pm

If you’re anything like me as a freshman, coming to UCSB was a shock.  Not only because I was in an entirely new environment, but because there was a completely new lingo that had to be developed in order avoid the line, “Oh, you must be a freshman…” at every social gathering I attended.  The ladies of HerCampus thought it’d be helpful to provide all the incoming Freshmen a UCSB dictionary to help dodge any potentially awkward conversations with upperclassmen.

FT: Francisco Torrez, renamed Santa Catalina after being referred to as the F@#$ Towers for one too many years- these are the off-campus dorms that house roughly one third of the Freshman Class. READ MORE

By Michelle Tokunaga
October 3, 2011 - 3:42pm

If you're anything like me, crashing classes is still a large part of education at UCSB.  Struggling to find seating, standing against back walls, and in desperation of an add code, students across UC Santa Barbara's campus look for open classes. READ MORE
