Meet this week’s profiled student: Nicole Scotten! She is a second-year communication studies student who is planning on minoring in music history.

1. Why do you love music so much?

I love music because I think it is one of the few things that makes the human experience unique. I find it unbelievable how music can create or bring out emotion in a way that nothing else can. My favorite thing about music is how it unites strangers in really intimate ways. I think that’s why I enjoy going to concerts more than anything else in the world. Experiencing music live in a crowd of strangers is incredible because to have a song touch you and thousands of others simultaneously is something you don’t find in many other places. Experiences like that make me feel more alive than anything else.

2. What is your favorite mainstream music? What lowkey artists would you recommend?

My favorite mainstream artist is Mumford & Sons. Their lyricism always hits home for me in a way that not many other artists can. I also really enjoy their folk influence and even on their recent album how they were able to expand past that signature sound. A lowkey artist I would recommend is Jack Garratt. I saw him as an opening act for a concert and he had amazing strange present. He plays a synthetic drum machine along with playing electric/acoustic guitar and singing, all at the same time. I recommend his song “Worry.”

3. What is your favorite meal?

My favorite meal is grilled cheese and tomato bisque soup. It’s basically been my favorite since I was a little kid.

4. What 5 places would you most like to travel?

If I could travel to five places, I would first go to Spain. I’ve been to quite a few European countries but unfortunately not Spain yet. I’d love to see Barcelona and Madrid as soon as I can. Second, I really want to go to Copenhagen, Denmark. I specifically want to go during Christmas time because I love the holiday season and that city takes it to a whole new level from what I’ve seen in pictures and videos. Third, I would like to go to Iceland. It’s such a beautiful country, and they have amazing whale watching. I love whales and it would be a great trip to do adventurous things. Fourth, I’d like to go to Venice, Italy. I have been to Italy before but was very sad to have missed seeing Venice so I have to go back. And fifth I’d like to go to Fiji. Again it’d be a great place for outdoor adventures, it’s beautiful, and I haven’t been on a tropical vacation for a long time.

5. What superpower would you most like to have?

If I had a super power, I would definitely want to fly. I know everyone says that but I love doing stuff like skydiving, so I think being able to fly would be super sick.
