How to Take a Kylie-Jenner-Worthy Selfie

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

We’ve all seen the Kardashian’s Instagram posts and mentally groaned over how flawless they look. The art of taking an amazing selfie is difficult to perfect, but it seems almost unrealistic how easily the Kardashians have mastered that talent. Kylie Jenner, for instance, always looks stunning in her Instagram photos.

Looks a little too flawless though, doesn’t it? Suspicious?

That’s because it is. Recently, sources have claimed the Kardashians use an app called Perfect365 to edit their photos before posting them to social media. The app has the ability to blur blemishes, add makeup, brighten and change eye color, slim your face, and lift your cheeks. With multiple themes to pick from, the app allows the user to completely transform a photo with the touch of a button. The app offers premade looks from different categories like Everyday, Chic, Romantic, Glamour, and Wild, or the user can adjust specific features including skin, face, eyes, mouth, and hair.

To demonstrate, I snapped a quick selfie and tested a few different features out on my photo. Get ready for my face!

Here is the original photo:

Here are a few of the edits, increasingly adjusted to look less and less like the real me. The app blurred out my freckles, gave me fuller lashes, added makeup, and adjusted my eye color.

As shown, the more you adjust the image, the more obvious it becomes that the photo has been edited. For example, my friends would definitely notice if I changed my eye color from green to blue in a photo on social media. However, making a few minor adjustments like those in the first edited image could easily go unnoticed by the average girl quickly scrolling through her Instagram feed.

There are two lessons to be learned here.

1. If your winged eyeliner is completely uneven or you don’t have time to put on makeup in the morning, don’t fret. This app will fix it for you! (Sarcasm.)

2. The ridiculously flawless photos you see on social media are probably not actually real.

Next time you look at a photo, celebrity or not, and feel like everyone else seems to take “better” selfies than you, DON’T! With the existence of this app and many more similar to it, chances are that the enviously flawless photo on your Instagram feed is actually completely edited and does not reflect reality. We’ve all been told how important it is to remember that models in magazines are photoshopped, but nowadays it’s even more important to remember that even “quick selfies” posted to social media are often edited far beyond the harmless Valencia filter.

If after reading this, you thought to yourself, “The Kardashians don’t even need that app – they’re already beautiful,” then make sure you realize that applies to you, tooThe truth is you’re perfect the way you are, and you don’t need an app like this to distort your natural beauty. Besides, now that the secret’s out, we’ll all know if you edited your way to 200 Instagram likes. #sorrynotsorry
