Dressing to Impress

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCLA chapter.

Fall is here, time for knits, scarves, boots, and…business casual? With fall being the prime time for recruiting there is a good chance you will be attending events that require a business casual, business professional and sometimes a neat casual dress code. Every fall I always get texts from my girlfriends asking if their outfit is appropriate for their specific event, so now I’ve put together this simple, easy to follow guide on how to dress to impress.

Neat Casual: This dress code is usually for coffees or more casual networking events. The appropriate attire for this occasion is a nice pair of jeans (not too skinny, not ripped and not faded) and a nice blouse. For the blouse, try to keep the color neutral, peaches, roses and creams are the most professional. Keep the make up and jewelry at a minimum, avoiding statement necklaces and bangles (as they tend to be loud and distracting) think pearls and dainty jewelry. For shoes, try a nice wedge (no peep toe though!) or a nice pair of flats. Most importantly about shoes is to make sure that they are clean and not ripped or old looking. If you have a plain top try adding a colorful blazer, but still stay with the neutral palette. I have a rose colored one that I constantly get compliments on!

Business Casual: Simply take replace the jeans with nice slacks or a skirt; black, gray or navy are your best choices, khaki is best for daytime events. However for business casual the blazer is a bit excessive, so replace that with a cute cardigan or similar style sweater if necessary. An important tip for the blouses is to make sure that your shoulders are always covered and that the neckline is not too high. Additionally, make sure the blouse is not too tight and that if it is a button up, what you aren’t bursting through the buttons. (Trust me, I’ve seen it.) Finally, f you’re wearing a skirt please do not forget to wear nylons, it seems like a detail, but it really does make a difference!

Business Professional: This is definitely the easiest and most straightforward dress code, although it is the most boring. Ladies, we have two choices, a matching pantsuit or a skirt suit. Make sure the top and bottom match (they don’t need to be the same brand, but it does help). Make sure to keep the shirt underneath simple, white, blues, and pinks are all safe bets. If you want to be a bit more daring a thin pinstripe is also a trendy addition (just make sure it still looks professional). For shoes, I would strongly recommend heels, and not the kind you wear out with your girl on a Friday night, get a nice pair of black or nude heels that aren’t too high and that are close toed. Again, keep the make up and jewelry simple, pearls are my favorite, a watch is always a very professional addition to your arm candy. Lastly, do not forget to smile, have a firm handshake and some confidence! (Oh, and please don’t forget the nylons ?)
